Video Description
Ammon Hillman walks through the Acts of Thomas and the Acts of Philip to show how the world outside the apostles described what they were doing. His claim is that christing is a pharmaceutical operation, the application of a drug to the eyes, and that the early texts call the apostles and Jesus himself a pharmakos (φαρμακός), a drug user and magus (μάγος), the word the Victorians quietly softened into sorcerer. The proof he offers is the scene in which Philip causes a man to go blind and then restores his sight, with the outsider saying, I know your magic.
He frames the cult with Moses. In Numbers 31 the Septuagint Greek calls the women taken after battle aposkeuē (ἀποσκευή), baggage or movable goods, and Moses tells the men to kill every male slave and keep only the girls who have not lain with a man, which the episode reads as the business side of the language of trafficking. The same filter is applied to the apostles, who are said to act in the magic of Jesus and to work a magical bridge over the boys, a word Hillman ties to the dative-case vow and to paideia (παιδεία), education performed on the child.
The seal closes the episode. Philip and Thomas give people the sphragida en christoi (σφραγίδα ἐν χριστῷ), the seal in the christ-drug, and a young boy begs the apostle to come to his house so that he may have the seal and afterward serve as his assistant and guard the precepts. Hillman reads the seals broken in Revelation as the same drug discs, the trojiskoi (τροχίσκοι), and he ends in Tartarus, where the serpent has no free speech and pours his poison on human lips, drawing the whole mystery back to epithumia (ἐπιθυμία), desire as the serpent’s venom.
