Video Description
Ammon Hillman starts with feet. He treats the gospel scene in which a woman pours expensive nard oil, muron (μύρον) of nardos (νάρδος), over Jesus’ feet and wipes them with her hair as a christing, and he reads her title Magdal as a Scythian word, the same figure he ties to the drug-bearing woman of the mysteries. His sources are a feast of authors who wrote at the same time as the Bible was being written, and the centerpiece comes from the library of Nero: a theriac addressed to the emperor and preserved through the physician Andromachus, which the episode calls a polythronic antidote, a drug of many poisons named Hilaria and Galene (γαλήνη), the calm after the storm.
The medical witnesses give the claim its shape. Heraclitus the Cretan describes a fruit pounded with oil and water and christed over the whole body so a person can walk out into winter cold without minding, and the episode reads that as a drug, not a cosmetic. Philarchus, writing on India, says a white root powdered into water and plastered over someone brings on the lethargy of sexual intercourse, and that young boys made eunuchs are christed until they no longer become aroused. Then, the episode says, a second set of drugs can be given to force satiriasis, arousal even in a eunuch. Philarchus, writing on Arabia, adds the line the episode calls the key: the colpos (κόλπος), the vagina, is a fountain of water, and if you christ someone’s feet from it, their genitals become distended and cannot be reduced without painful therapy.
The final movement names the ingredients. The theriac includes the opium poppy, mekon (μήκων), and hemlock, koneion (κώνειον), with nine different snake venoms, among them the viper echis (ἔχις), the horned viper kerastes (κεράστης), and the thirst snake dipsas (δίψας), while the blister beetle forces the kind of satyriasis even a eunuch cannot resist. The episode notes that the wild nard the prophets called the blood of Ares, and that the word Eucharist itself appears in the introduction of Dioscorides as medical language, with two ways to be overcome: by the bite of the poison caster, or by the potion of black death, after which the christ is raised into death and back out again.
