Ammon Hillman reads the old infancy gospel in which Salome refuses to believe a virgin has given birth until she tests Mary with her own finger — a palpation, what the episode calls early gynecology — and her hand withers and burns as though eaten up by fire. An angel tells her to touch the child, and she is healed. The episode insists this is the women’s science behind the mystery: the midwives are where the drug knowledge comes from, the same craft the Book of Enoch says the sons of God taught their wives, root cutting, songs, and plants.
Then it walks into the temple of Jerusalem. It reads the call to gather the undefiled daughters of the Hebrews and give each a burning lamp so the child will not turn back, and the episode says what the text leaves unspoken: the lamps are burning drugs. From the Mishnah comes the passage that an adult man who has intercourse with a girl under three has done nothing, because it is like poking a finger into an eye — a tear falls and another forms, so the hymen is restored — and that a boy with an adult woman counts as one whose hymen was ruptured by wood. The rabbis dispute only the price, a hundred or two hundred dinars. The episode’s claim is that this is the child-trading machinery at the root of both Judaism and Christianity.
The rest is philology. Isaiah’s suffering man knows how to bear malakia (μαλακία), a softness the lexicons gloss as the catamite and the shaking-bottom dance, and the Septuagint hymn exalts ‘the horns of his Christ’ — the horned Christ the episode says Michelangelo knew well enough to put on Moses. The name Emmanuel (Ἐμμανουήλ) is traced to the god of mania, and the episode shows how the Hebrew sign-word was carved to cover the Greek semeion (σημεῖον), calling it a forgery. It closes on the Gospel of Mary: ‘there is no sin, but it is you who make sin when you do the things that are like the nature of adultery,’ Peter sulking because the savior loved Mary more than the rest of women, and Mary gazing into the air for a full hour to hear the voice — the drug-made state the episode says the whole rite was built to reach.
