Video Description
Ammon Hillman turns a grammar lesson into an argument about music. The show starts with Revelation 14, where the voice John hears is like kitharoidōn kitharizontōn (κιθαρῳδῶν κιθαριζόντων), guitar players playing their guitars, and it says the previous line calls them the guitars of God. The episode then spends the early part quoting classical philologists who admit what English speakers rarely feel: Latin, the one Roman text, laments the poverty of its own vocabulary before Greek, and Smyth’s grammar says the Greek particles resist translation because English is over-emphatic and cumbersome beside them.
The language is presented as a device, and the episode walks through the root kithara (κιθάρα). Where English has one word, guitar, Greek builds a whole family around the stringed instrument, and the episode connects the string to the bow, to neuron (νεῦρον), tendon, nerve, and sinew, and to the music of the cosmos. So science is not the work of lab coats, it argues, but of musicians; Apollo is both healer and the god who brings the plague. In Revelation 15 the angels hold seven phialai (φιάλαι), which the episode reads as bowls of drugs, and the thronos (θρόνος), throne, is shown from Galen’s Nero to be a medicine. It closes on Lady Babylon: the song is her song, the music leads the drugs, and the apocalypse arrives through the guitar.
