Ammon Hillman opens the new year by counting five words. The five terms people hear most around Christianity, he argues, are all drug terms once you return to Greek. Christos (χριστός) is a drug, usually applied to the eyes and tied to intercourse. The gospel, euangelion (εὐαγγέλιον), is the power of a drug, its efficacy. The savior, soter (σωτήρ), is the one who brings health. The mystery, mysterion (μυστήριον), is a drug in the prescriptions of Galen and Alexander of Tralles. And baptize, baptizo (βαπτίζω), means to dip, to plunge, to dye.
That last word gets the full treatment. The episode shows the verb bapto (βάπτω) at work in sources: arrows are dipped in poison, cloth is dyed, and hair is dyed red or blonde with a paste of myrrh and flower that is worked in as an ointment. Lucian describes people in India drinking from three springs of Pan, the satyrs, and Silenus and falling into a state like drunkenness, which the episode reads as being baptized into intoxication. And it says the first person recorded to both christ herself and invent baptizing is Medea, the same figure whose name sits at the head of the whole tradition.
The Bible is then read through those words. Paul writes that all who are baptized are baptized into Christ’s death, eis ton thanaton (εἰς τὸν θάνατον), buried together with him and raised into newness of life, and the episode says no church today actually performs that death-and-resurrection. In Acts 22, Paul enters ecstasy in the temple, and the episode ties that ecstasy to the same altered state. Peter’s metanoeo (μετανοέω) is translated not as repent but as shift your mind, and the whole rite is for receiving the pneuma (πνεῦμα), the spirit. The hour’s verdict is that baptism is a psychotropic operation, a doorway into the mystery, not the ceremony staged on Sunday mornings.
