Ammon Hillman closes the series on the part the translators buried. The hour starts with love poetry and then lands on the line from Genesis that says the Spirit of God moved over the face of the waters. The episode follows Porphyry, the philosopher it says the Christians later burned, into that verse: the nymphs, naiades (νύμφαι), are read from the Greek verb naein (νάειν), to flow, and the souls that descend into genesis, into generation, are said to stick to water that is theopneustos (θεόπνευστος), God-breathed. In this reading, the first lines of Genesis are Greek cult physics, not a weather report, and a soul enters matter by getting wet.
The red heifer then becomes the centerpiece. The Hebrew tradition expects an actual cow, but the episode runs the Greek. Stereoōma (στερέωμα), translated firmament, is the framework, and the root ster- gives a heifer, damalis (δάμαλις), which is also a girl who has not given birth, a parthenos (παρθένος), a virgin. So the golden calf of the desert, it argues, was a girl, and Numbers’ red heifer, amōmos (ἄμωμος), without blemish, and healthy, hygieia (ὑγίεια), is a priestess fitted for the oracle. The first attack of the one-god build, the episode says, was on the virgin, because the virgin is where it all holds together.
The final pages name the blood and the seed. Ezekiel’s city of blood, it says, carries a container of Eos (Ἠώς), and the Greek root leia (λεία), booty, in the word for the rock where the blood is set, leads to the channel’s standing claim about the lēistēs (λῃστής), the trafficker, and about the temple as a business of buying and selling the chorus. Judaism and Christianity, the episode concludes, are twins, half the genes each, hatched from the same mother mystery that monism killed. Protect the virgin, the stream repeats, or lose everything.
