Video Description
The show opens a first-century text called the Testament of Abraham, which Ammon Hillman says the muse placed in front of him only this week, and it reads the nineteenth section where Abraham meets death face to face. Death stands before him, and Abraham, tired and unwilling, tells him to leave until the figure named Thantos (θάνατος) refuses to go without his psyche (ψυχή). The argument of the night is simpler than the old title suggests: the person you meet in these Christing and resurrection rites is death himself, and death is not a metaphor.
The center moves through the seven faces of death. At Abraham’s request, Thantos shows all the forms he can wear, and the episode names them as the deaths by fire, by falling from cliffs, by the water, by thunder, by weapons, and last, the cup of death, the potērion (ποτήριον) mixed with pharmaka (φάρμακα), the drugs. The text is read as a death-inducer for the cult, paired with the idea that the one who drinks cannot be harmed the way the old saying goes, and Galen is brought in to show how deeply the medical and the religious share the same cup.
The last piece is the Orphic hymn to death and the seven dragon heads. The hymn lists manna (μάννα), read as finely powdered frankincense, and describes death as the dissolver who breaks the bonds of physis (φύσις), nature, while the speaker commands the time and the road. The music supplied by the priest of Apollo is held up as the rite’s other half, the new dithyrambos (διθύραμβος) that the Renaissance could not rebuild because it had no electric string. Here and there the travel plan surfaces again, a school proposed for Kiev, but the evidence stays on the page: the cup, the drug, and the face you meet on the other side.
