This session goes after a claim that the Roman emperors were not involved with drugs, and it centers on a line from Galen about the antidote of Aelius Gallus, the command surgeon in an eastern war for Augustus. The Greek says that with this compound Caesar was symphonos (σύμφωνος), in harmony, and Ammon Hillman reads that as the emperor being prepared for the death rites, because the antidote was made against the thanasima (θανάσιμα), the death-inducing agents of the cult. The point is stated plainly: Augustus Caesar belonged to a cult of death, and his arch physician made the dose.
The medical texts are the backbone. Galen defines three kinds of antidotes, one for the death-inducers, the theriac (θηριακή), one for the poison-sending ioboloi (ἰοβόλοι), and one for the body worn down by a bad way of living. The history of the theriac is told through Mithridates, who tested aconite, scorpion, and above all the echidna (ἔχιδνα), the viper, on prisoners condemned to die, so that the knowledge did not come from trial and error alone. Then Andromachus, the arch physician of Nero, is shown altering the recipe, and the emperors are tied to it through their access to the empire’s money and resources.
The close returns to Her. The episode asks why Julius Caesar hung a portrait of Medea in the temple of Venus Genetrix, the mother who brings forth, and reads the answer as the same one from the top of the hour: everything that is Rome comes through Medea, the drug-queen whose name gave the Romans their word for medicine. The old claim that the rites were only a party is set against the description of a healing horror, where the aim is the inner oracular voice rather than a rave, and the show ends where it began, with the chthonic music as the key that opens the gate.
