The claim at the center is that the book of Job was written in Greek and only later remade into Hebrew, and today’s test is a chapter most readers have never met. The episode opens with clips of Bart Ehrman explaining Job as a peculiar Hebrew book about suffering, then sets that story aside. Reading from chapter 30, Ammon Hillman shows a different Job: a wealthy man hounded by a bow-wielding, nomadic people who strip him of his way, flood his mind with voices, and drag him into their rite.
The word-by-word reading is the proof on offer. Job says the strangers have made him their guitar, kithara (κιθάρα), a Greek word the show insists is the smoking gun, because the Hebrew text has to forge a catch-all, kinnor, for a term the language never had. The passage then names the attackers as the halimēs, shameless women, which a dictionary equates with the porne (πόρνη), the Bacchant women under the influence of methē (μέθη), the strong drink. They sing over him, fumigate him with thumiamata (θυμιάματα), open a quiver of poisoned arrows, and, in this reading, force him into an initiation he never chose.
The scene ends with Job’s body used as evidence. The Greek speaks of him howling in the middle of their ekklēsia (ἐκκλησία), their holy assembly, and losing control of his own genitals, a state the show ties to the same medical vocabulary as an erection, while he becomes the brother of the sirens and the companion of the struthos (στρουθός), the bird-word a later Hebrew flattened into an ostrich. The point is not to praise the ritual: it is presented as a forced Christing, a violent opening of the eyes. The Hebrew could not say any of it, so a song of horror became a tale about desert birds and suffering animals.
