Video Description
The episode opens by feeding the audience a series of clips it calls the brothel, starting with MythVision claiming that Roman medicine must mean Latin sources, and therefore that a focus on Galen is not really classical philology. Ammon Hillman answers that Galen, the body physician of Marcus Aurelius, wrote in Greek, and that Roman libraries themselves are pulled from Greek, the same point used against the Roman hospitals and illiteracy claims. The conclusion the show draws is that a classical philologist must meet the Greek on the page, and that these critics are selling a discipline they cannot actually perform.
The centerpiece is Homer. Odysseus strings his bow the way a trained singer stretches a lyre string, using ram gut twisted for strength, and when he plucks the string it sings with a voice like a swallow. The episode follows the Greek through neura (νευρά), the cord that also carries lightning through the body, and into aoidë (ἀοιδή), first the twang of a bowstring and then a song or oracle. For the show, that glide from string to voice to prophecy is the whole history of the Greek language and the answer to the question of where the oracles come from.
The names of the night are the satanic verses. Acts 19:19 describes early believers burning their magic books, and the show reads that as a reform led by Paul turning the cult away from its own writing. The opposite book appears in a Hermes text, energized works told to stay immortal and hidden through every aion until Saturn, the elder god, brings forth a systema (σύστημα), the word the show ties both to a system of musical intervals and to the strain of a tightened string. Isis pours ambrosia (ἀμβροσία) for Horus, and the passage the episode lingers on says the work is Christing with the drug of incorruption, aphtharsia (ἀφθαρσία), the immortality the priesthood offers its planted oracle.
