Ammon Hillman walks the word stigma (στίγμα), which the ancient lexica list as a mark, a brand, or a tattoo, then works through what he says the texts actually describe. A slave could flee to a temple of Heracles, take the holy marks, and by law become the servant of that god. The tattoo, in that system, is not decoration.
The reading then lands on Paul. The episode quotes the apostle writing that he bears the marks of Jesus on his body, and notes that the word there is the plural stigmata (στίγματα). Hillman puts that verse beside Greek sources where marked people are identified as the eugeneis (εὐγενεῖς), the tattooed who are called noble and highborn, while the unmarked are named the lowborn. The name of a god worn on the head is presented as a claim of protection, the sign of whose power covers the person.
