The opening claim comes straight from the medical writings of the Greeks. Ammon Hillman reads a single line from the Hippocratic corpus and renders it greed is a limitless disease, philarguria nosos aoristos (φιλαργυρία νόσος ἀόριστος). The point pressed is that this is not modern talk about spending habits; in the old medicine, greed is classed among the diseases of the mind, and the person who has it can be read by the symptoms left on their behavior.
The Greek has more than one word for the sickness, and the hour walks through them one by one. There is pleonexia (πλεονεξία), the urge to have more, philarguria (φιλαργυρία), the love of silver, and aplestia (ἀπληστία), the desire that cannot be filled. A fragment from Democritus is read as a way to spot it early: a child who grabs and hoards things is already teaching a greedy way of life. The cure, the episode says, is not a quiet prayer to the self, but the one the physicians give, to cut out the bitter root of the greed.
