The hour opens with a guest, Bruno de la Vega, the Chilean producer of the Stones and Serpents documentary, but the main course is an old medical-and-magic text that was written at the same time as Jesus. Reading Posidonius on screen, Ammon Hillman notes that the old pharmacy is divided into two kinds of drugs: the ones that kill and the ones that bring soteria (σωτηρία), salvation. From there the episode makes its claim that the earliest Christian vocabulary is medicine and magic, and that words like gospel and baptism grew out of talk about how well a drug works.
The prescriptions that follow are read one at a time. A fish head is turned into vapor and mixed with smyrna (σμύρνα), the myrrh, so that breathing it makes a person enthusiastic; the trick is to christ the nostrils first so the fumes do not put the person to sleep. Then the eyes. The purple of the porphyra thalassia (πορφύρα θαλασσία), the kerykion (κηρύκιον) shell, is said to guard against eye diseases, and the salve is named a collyrion (κολλύριον), the very word the episode says the book of Revelation uses when it tells people to anoint their eyes so they can see.
The last pass is the one the title points to. The satyrian plant, the man orchid, is read as drying women who are too wet to enter intercourse without pain. A pleasure powder is sprinkled onto the genitalia before the act, and honey is christed on so the parts do not swell and dry out. The result the text promises, in the reading given here, is a megale hedone (μεγάλη ἡδονή), a great pleasure, reached through entasis (ἔντασις), the stretch or strain, and described as aphaton (ἄφατον), something too holy and too much to put into words. The episode closes that stretch within the same drug-and-vision world as the eye-salve of the Apocalypse.

for for years and also we have the privilege to work with people in malt island with toran which
is another person that has his own his own project over there and he liked the idea of the movie we’re

we launched the um teaser in the lady babylon like two weeks or three good weeks ago and you

i say about me i mean i’m just um well i’m a producer but also i would say that i’m like the
field coordinator so in a way i have to be to be able to film in the mediterranean i’m here in
chile in south america now i’m from here i’ve been a couple of times in europe so i have a lot of
friends but um that helped me a bit because i’m the coordinator if you need a let’s say a boat
the director wants a boat i have to be able to find a way to have a boat if we need a pickup
track to go like 2000 kilometers to somewhere. Somehow I have to
make it happen. And well, it’s a lot of people involved. So if I
say like, thank you, I will be like I have a huge list. So I
hope I hope I can be able to do that after we launch the movie,
which is right now being done. I mean, just today, they were

perspective like um from a very maybe superficial one so at that point um you have been like very
uh high to my brother there so it’s um you have been very important in it actually because we
didn’t even know about i mean i know about philology we have heard about it but it was
not involved in the first first script so watching what you are doing here in lady babylon um well
it kind of um triggered us to go a bit deeper into understanding what actually philology does
so the scripts the script i mean went like completely different and crazy and we understood
that we should be um researching uh like a bunch i mean like like three times what we already have
did like a year and a half i mean year and a half ago when we started with it so then
it became like kind of a rabbit hole to be honest because we wanted to talk about greece and the
mediterranean and well actually i’ve been in the mediterranean a lot of times because um i’ve been
living in multi island i have a lot of friends there i was going there because i’m a diver so
i was always like searching for different places to go and i was fortunate enough to
make good friends in the mediterranean so um everything was like kind of clicking clicking to
go over there and do this project but the whole thing changed when we started to go deep into the
idea of the text and then obviously when i was talking i’m the producer and the field coordinator
so i’m not actually creating like the script um just to think like okay we should do this because
this is cool but when i gave them the idea of what text is saying to us about the first script which
was the roots of western civilization kind of thing about the language music the things that
actually spanish we say a lot of greek words so it was kind of obvious with like the first idea
so after we went again like into this that you are giving us here in lady babylon i mean it became
like something completely different everybody’s studying for like reading a lot when i’m not
reading i’m listening to something when i’m not not reading about it and or listening i’m
i don’t know like freaking dreaming about it you know so we are kind of going deep on it
that the first idea and then stones of serpents kind of emerged as a new kind let me interrupt you
let me interrupt you just for a second because i think i think that’s a very important point that

but it became something important because of the same research i mean we wanted to be
uh in in some some spots so then i connect with um with this other production that the
production company that i’m telling you toran is called nikara body whisperers they are in they
live in godso island which is a small island right beside malta and so then it just went crazy this
was like um six six months ago five months ago and everything went like i’m just now try to
organize everything to be honest and we went there and obviously it was a good decision because we
as we were doing the movie about i actually have something here that the director gave me
which is like as the process the creative process that he’s doing is on is happening every day

we at first thought it was fairy tale and then we understood like um i have been reading about
