Video Description
The episode opens by naming three cities, New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, for a coming crusade, and then sets a Sibylline oracle text in front of the audience as the prophecy behind it. Ammon Hillman reads a passage in which Beliar (Βελιὰρ) will come and establish the heights of the mountains, the sea, the sun, and the shining moon, and in which the same figure makes the faithful, the chosen, and those outside the law wander. He calls this oracular song, the song of the Sibyls, and he notes that early critics of the Christians called them Sibyllists, followers of the Sibyls.
The center of the hour is the woman the prophecy name-checks. The show reads the line that at the time Beliar comes, the cosmos will be ruled by the craft of a woman, a widow, and it translates what follows: she throws the gold, silver, bronze, and iron into the sea. Against that it sets Revelation, where the woman in purple declares, I am established a queen, and I am no widow, and I know no grieving. The claim is that the biblical book is the same story turned against her, the figure the prophecy calls Lady Babylon.
The final movement turns one small translation error into the larger problem. The show replays the scholar M. David Litwa telling Danny Jones that John’s phrase about the father of the devil should be read as you are from the father of the devil, and it points out the Greek is an attributive, humeis ek tou patros tou diabolou, not the reading Litwa offered. Around that correction, the hour returns to the crusade, the thirty-minute film, and its standing claim that the creator described in these texts is a woman who brings back the dead.

researcher of ancient Greek texts and author of books such as The Chemical Muse,
