Video Description
The second GreekWorkshop brings a guest named Wretch into the room to work through the Mithras liturgy of the Greek Magical Papyri, the ritual text Ammon Hillman says is the real mystery the course has been circling. The two read the Greek where the initiate is said to christ the mysterion (μυστήριον), the mystery compound, into the opsis (ὄψις), the gaze or agency of sight, a purple collyrium that gives a second kind of seeing. Hillman argues this is the same act the later translation flattens into an anointing, when the Greek points to something pharmacological.
The discussion then turns to how the rite is shared. An initiate is a mystes (μύστης), and with the prefix that means with, the text speaks of a co-initiate who goes through purification together, fasting for seven days so that two people can reportedly chant the same oracular verse. The aim is named directly: apathanatismos (ἀπαθανατισμός), immortalization, the state of no longer fearing death. Wretch ties the practice back to Zoroaster and argues that Zoroastrianism is a monotheistic and dualistic reworking of an older Median and Medea tradition.
The episode closes with two of its strongest claims. Hillman tells the story of a patient of Carl Jung who described a vision that later matched the Mithras liturgy when that document was published years afterward, and he reads the vowel sequence from alpha through omega as the initiate’s map from birth to rebirth. A poem by a member named Jeff is praised for naming the force underneath: logos as blade, as venom, as pharmakon (φάρμακον), a word that can mean both poison and cure. The history and the language, the hour insists, are still moving underneath the religion people think they know.
