Video Description
This episode is a workshop on how the old magic actually worked, opened by announcing the plan to take the questions onto the streets of New York and ask passersby what the word Christ means. The stream sets the ancient text next to the modern mission: an incantation meant for a piece of fruit, found in a temple at Heliopolis and written in Egyptian and Greek, which promises a drug and a charm and ends with a prayer to Kyprogenea (Κυπρογένεια), the Cyprus-born Aphrodite.
Ammon Hillman then translates the song line by line. I am going to give you a drug, it reads, a nourishment for mortal man and for immortal god, with the power released through the fruit and the woman made to burn in love. It says the spell is written on papyrus from a mummy mask, and it ties the piece to the Greek Magical Papyri, the PGM, dated from the second century BC into the second century AD, while pointing out that no Hebrew stands next to it. The terms matter to him: this is Christing with the drug of the eyes, and the graces it produces are charis (χάρις), its attraction.
The close follows the trail to Isis and Osiris. Isis is Christed and sets her face and vision so she can approach the kolpos (κόλπος) of Osiris, a word the stream refuses to read as pocket and instead reads as the body’s portal of entry, the harbor where the medicine returns the power. From their union comes the seed of Amun, and from that seed, Sophia. The episode ends on God is a woman and the instruction to read the Greek for yourself rather than trust a summary.
