Video Description
The Gnostics mapped the universe as thirty divine beings arranged in fifteen pairs, all resting on one rule: nothing up there can create alone. This video from the Conscious Radical channel sets that cosmology out the way the texts actually do.
It explains what an aeon is and how the word shifted from a span of time to a named being, and it opens the words Pleroma and Hysterema, fullness and shortfall. The single time an aeon broke the rule is, in this telling, why the world is the way it is, a flaw rather than a design.

In around 180 CE, Irenaeus of Lyon documented the conceptual map of the universe in his book
Against Heresies. This map described 30 divine beings arranged in 15 pairs emanating outward
from an unknowable depth called Bythos. They were known as the Aeons. Bythos is the first of the 30
eons and the eons emanate on purpose. Irenaeus says they produced by conjunction wishing by their
own efforts to glorify the father. When Irenaeus documented them his view was hostile and critical
he wanted to document the teachings and texts that he considered heretical but what he actually did
was record a teaching of the Gnostics that would otherwise have been lost. These teachings stayed
buried until two discoveries brought them back and i’ll come back to both properly in a moment
one was in 1896 and one in 1945. these discoveries were crucial because they provided direct access
to original gnostic scriptures giving scholars and readers an authentic understanding of gnostic
beliefs rather than just knowing them through critics like uranus so who are the eons well eon
is greek for age we use the word today eons ago so originally eon simply meant a span of time
in the early sources the eons first described an age or era then the concept shifted and became
associated with a specific place in the divine realm a region of spiritual reality eventually
in Gnostic texts the eons became personified as divine beings or emanations each with their own
attributes and roles this progression from time to place to being is important for understanding
how the idea evolved over centuries the manuscripts slide between a place and a being and
that can be confusing when you’re trying to decipher the translation of the text that is
until you understand what their intention was behind it. All 30 beings from the Pleroma,
the fullness. They came in pairs called Syzygy which literally means yoked together. Syzygy as
a word relates to connection and alignment and Carl Jung adopted this word and used it in his
psychological works. So back in January 1896 a German scholar named Carl Reinhardt brought a
papyrus book from an antiquities dealer in Cairo. Now its origins are a little dubious but it’s said
to have been found wrapped in feathers and pushed into a wall at a Christian burial site. It was a
Coptic text from the 5th century and contained the Apocryphon of John. It was catalogued in Berlin
and is now known as the Berlin Codex. Then in 1945, 13 codices were found in Nag Hammadi,
a collection of 52 Coptic texts where six or so are duplicates and the remainder are distinct
works. They were 4th century copies of much older 2nd and 3rd century Greek originals.
But as I mentioned before, the most detailed account of the eons actually comes from Arrhenius
where he detailed the structure of the Pleroma and the aeons purely to ridicule the teachings.
Now just as inside we call them Gnostic teachings but that isn’t what they would have called
themselves. There wasn’t a Gnostic religion. We use the word to describe them but in actuality
they were one strand among many versions of Christianity in a period where there was no
settled orthodox Christianity. This orthodoxy took centuries with Arrhenius arguing for it in 180 CE
and Athanasius writing the first list of the 27 books that we now call the New Testament in 367 CE.
However for ease of referencing I will continue to use the words so we have a common understanding.
So why did the Gnostics feel the need to describe the world in all its cosmology?
I think it’s because there was a philosophical problem that they were trying to resolve
and it’s a question that we still ask today.
How can a perfect source create an imperfect world?
If the highest source, which is perfect, is implicated in the mess of this world,
then it isn’t perfect or all-knowing.
So the teaching and belief in emanation solves this question
by inserting a graded series or a set of layers.
in gnostic cosmology emanation describes how the divine source unfolds into successive realities
with each layer further removed from the pure origin and this idea isn’t unique to the gnostics
philosophers like plotinus describe the process of the one radiating outward into the divine mind
and the world’s soul using similar language of emanation emanation turns up in jewish mysticism
2 in the Kabbalah where creation flows out from an unknowable divine route through 10 stages
though that does come later with the Kabbalist writing in the 12th and 13th centuries. All three
traditions share the idea of a perfect and hidden source that expresses itself through intermediary
stages making reality a series of unfoldings from the divine. However a key difference is that
Gnostic systems tend to describe a dramatic fall or error in the emanative chain,
resulting in the imperfect material world,
while Neoplatonism and Jewish mystical teachings tend to see the process as orderly unfolding,
with each layer following from the one above it and nothing going wrong.
Comparing these traditions helps us to see how the Gnostics were part of a broader philosophical movement,
grappling with how transcendence relates to the manifest world. If you look at Plotinus you’ll
see a very similar shape. The Gnostics described it through myth giving it names and a plot but
there is one difference which is easy to miss. In Plotinus the one does not choose, it overflows
because it’s full the way the sun shines without deciding to and he goes further and says that
having to deliberate would be a weakness and anything that needs to work out how to create
is like a craftsman who had to learn a trade because real generative power just produces
because that’s what it is. The Valentinian eons do choose. Irenaeus says they were produced for
the father’s glory and then wishing by their own efforts to achieve it they sent out emanations by
conjunction. So bear in mind that conjunction is something two beings do together rather than
something that happens to them. So the Pleroma is not filling up on its own. Each pair is producing
on purpose and what they produce is an act of devotion towards a source they can’t see.
And this matters because if an emanation runs automatically, Sophia’s fall is a fault in the
machinery and nobody is answerable for anything. But if the eons emanate by will, her fall is a
decision. Sophia wanted to know the father just like the other eons but she was the one who took
action to fulfil her wants on her own. The pairing rule only means something if breaking it was
possible. The eons were in pairs which I find really interesting and I wondered where this
idea may have originated about 200 kilometers down the nile from nakamadi there is a city that
the greeks called homopolis and the egyptians called kimenu which means the city of eight
the eight are four male and female couples depicted with frog heads for the male and
serpent heads for the female with abstract names for water infinity darkness and hiddenness
they represented the formless chaotic elements of the cosmos before the universe was created
the four pairs original names and literal translations are none and nounette translating
to the primeval waters or the abyss they were believed to embody the infinite stagnant cosmic
ocean that existed before space and time out of which the first island of solid earth eventually
emerged. He and Haunet translating to infinity. They represented the vast immeasurable expanse
of the universe before it was organized into defined physical dimensions. Kek and Kalket
translate to primordial darkness. They represented the total absolute darkness that covered the
universe before the first light or sun was ever born. Aman and Amaunet translate to the hidden one.
they represented the invisible wind air and unseen potential energy of life that lingered quietly in
the chaos before creation began according to the priests at kamanu these eight entities
eventually interacted and their collision caused a massive energetic shift forming the benben the
primeval hillock of earth as it rose from the waters and upon this hill in one version of the
story, a cosmic egg hatched and released the sun god Ra. Other versions have a lotus opening
instead of an egg and the name of the god is Atum or Nefertum rather than Ra. The Egyptians were
quite relaxed about running several different accounts of the same event at once. Having
completed their cosmic purpose, the eight retired to the underworld. Now the Valentinian Ogdoad is
also eight made up of four couples. The word Ogdoad simply means group of eight and in Gnostic
cosmology it refers to the set of eight primal eons at the root of divine reality. These pairs
form the core of the Valentinian system. You’ll also see the term pleroma used throughout the text.
Pleroma is a Greek word meaning fullness and in Gnostic thought it describes the complete realm
of the divine presence the totality of all eons as the fullness or wholeness of the spiritual world
whether the gnostics took this from egypt inherited it through greek philosophy or
arrived at the same shape on their own is still argued about but what is not in dispute
is that paired abstractions standing before creation were native to egypt for well over a
thousand years before the Gnostics existed. The four at the root of the Ogdoad are depth and
silence, mind and truth, word and life and the human and the assembly. Everything else comes
from word and life and the human and the assembly. Word and life produce five more pairs, deep and
mingling, unaging and union, self-produced and pleasure, immovable and blending, only begotten
and happiness. The human and the assembly produce six more pairs, including the particularly
interesting Advocate and Faith, Paternal and Hope, Maternal and Love. You might recognise Faith,
Hope and Love, Pistis, Alpis and Agape from 1 Corinthians 13. And now these three remain,
faith hope and love but the greatest of these is love the Valentinians claimed that Paul taught
two things an outer teaching for everybody and an inner teaching that passed through a man called
Thudas the word Pilaroma also came from Paul and it appears 17 times in the original Greek
text of the New Testament in standard English translations it appears as fullness completion
or fulfillment and then finally the last three pairs were praise and understanding of the
assembly and blessedness and then thalitus and sophia which translates as the desired and wisdom
okay so you now may ask why male and female well it turns out that actually this relates to language
and the grammatical gender of the noun almost all the suffixes that build abstract nouns in greek
are feminine forming. And I’m going to put them on the screen so you can see them yourself.
As you can imagine, this posed a problem which was solved by creating a type of scaffolding
from the feminine noun. So did they deliberately choose to make the divine world half male and
half female? Or did the language do that, but instead of flattening it out, they built on top
of it? So did, in other words, the grammatical gender of abstract nouns influence how these
concepts were personified as either male or female beings so for example in latin as well as greek
abstract qualities such as victory nike in greek victoria in latin were also considered feminine
which led to their depiction as goddesses this pattern shows how language shaped the structure
of cosmological models creating metaphysical frameworks that reflected grammatical conventions
which in turn means the pairs aren’t two sexes which iranis also says directly each member of
the ogdoad is masculine feminine but bello in the sethian text is mother father every eon is already
both but still paired with one another what they are paired with is actually more fascinating
because it’s describing a relationship on a spectrum or gradient and it’s two poles of one
thing so let’s look at the pairings what is mind without truth without truth to
anchor the mind it would run as pure logic detached from reality or as the
Valentinians would describe it the mind provides the spark but the truth
provides a space for that spark to become real without truth the mind is
completely sterile it can think but it can’t create anything of eternal value
What is word without life? Without life word is the spiritual equivalent of a computer program
perfectly logical but completely devoid of soul breath or consciousness. Alternatively it can be
described as just noise and that is something we have industrialized. What is the human without
the assembly? Now this is one I’m going to come back to in another piece but I want to explain
the word assembly so in ancient greek the word ecclesia meant a civic or citizens assembly not
as we know it now which relates to the church so basically it was where people gathered to make
decisions so when we look at the human and the assembly it’s the person the person’s power to
decide alongside other people and this pairing sits at the fourth position of the universe
so what would the human without the assembly mean a human without the ecclesia is a solitary spark
left out in the cold without the assembly the individual remains asleep unaware of their divine
origins and easily manipulated by the material rulers that is why this pairing has been reserved
for another piece to discuss in detail and then finally let’s look at sophia and thalitus
thalitus comes from fellow to want to will to intend is often translated as divine will or
desire and sophia is wisdom so what is wisdom without divine will the valentinian version
describes sophia wanting to know the father and she wants it so much that she acts alone without
her consort. In the Apocrypha she conceives a thought from herself and wants to bring forth
a likeness out of herself and what comes out is Yaldabaoth and Yaldabaoth builds the broken world
the counterfeit Pleroma. Arrhenius tells the Valentinian version differently. There Sophia’s
passion produces a formless thing with no shape to it and the world maker arrives later out of a
lower Sophia they call Akamoth. These are two accounts that both describe Sophia producing
something alone which was deficient. So what is divine will or desire without wisdom? Well perhaps
it’s just appetite. The broken world is called Hysterima which comes from Hysteron meaning to be
late, to fall short and it’s also the root of the word Hysteresis meaning a lag in the system. The
Hysterima is the opposite of the pyroma and it’s another one of Paul’s words and can be understood
as the gap where something should be. The Gnostics believe that we live inside the gap
in the shortfall not as a punishment or as an illusion but because something is missing
and also as an aside because you may think the word hysterima has something to do with hysteria
and I thought that might be the case too but they come from different Greek roots.
hysteria is womb and hysteros is behindness the pistosophia provides a list of the beings that
come out of the great invisible and it’s in book one chapter one they are the unbegotten the
self-begotten the begotten the luminaries and then the unpaired beings that come out without
any other being being connected to them so how can we explain these unpaired beings and why were
they included within the texts one possible interpretation is that the
unpaired beings serve as symbols of isolation or separation representing
aspects of existence or consciousness that have become disconnected from the
original fullness or from meaningful relationships in Gnostic cosmology the
paired syzygies reflect balance harmony and creative potential while the
unpaired figures point to a state of deficiency, rupture or lack of integration. Perhaps the text
included these unpaired beings to warn against spiritual or psychological isolation or to
dramatize the consequences of separation from the divine source and from one another. To see how
this might relate to our own world you just have to think about social media echo chambers or online
filter bubbles many of us can feel isolated within personalized streams of information
surrounded only by views that reinforce our own especially when they are without meaningful
engagement or connection to a broader community this modern form of isolation echoes the gnostic
warning about losing connection losing connection to the fullness and becoming trapped in separation
which is why I do keep drawing parallels with the Gnostic texts and our world today
but at the end of the day I’ll always let you make up your own minds. When thinking about when these
texts were written I can also see a political reading of the unpaired. The Yaldabaoth says
more than once in the Apocryphon of John, I am a jealous God and there is no other God beside me
but if there are no other gods why would he be jealous of who well that line also features in
exodus 20 and isaiah 45 in exodus it says you shall have no other gods before me for i the lord
your god am a jealous god now the gnostics argued that jealousy is a flawed human passion if the god
were truly the infinite supreme and ultimate source of all existence he would have no reason
to be jealous because nothing else could rival him. In Isaiah, it says, I am the Lord and there
is no other. Beside me, there is no God. I form the light and create darkness. I bring prosperity
and create disaster. In original texts from the Nag Hammadi finds, such as the Apocryphine of John,
it’s recorded that when the Adabaoth looked out over the material world he’d built,
his own ignorance blinded him. He couldn’t see the spiritual pleroma above him.
and he says it again i am god and there is no other besides me so he keeps making this claim
because there’s nobody there to contradict him the gnostics pointed directly to isaiah i create
disaster or evil they compared this statement with the teachings of jesus who spoke only of a
completely loving light-filled and merciful father they use this contrast to claim that the god of
exodus and isaiah who creates darkness commands wars and throws plagues cannot possibly be the
same supreme god of love revealed in the new testament but think about when the gnostics were
writing this under a roman imperial cult where the emperor’s sole authority was the organizing
fact of public life and read inside a church that was consolidating power around one bishop per city
and one line of succession. So this is a text where the loudest claim is that being the only one
is the mark of a fraud. It’s not making a narrow theological point, it’s claiming about
who gets to run things. The psychological reading is that the deficiency doesn’t realise it’s
deficient. Yadav Bayof is alone and thinks that’s how it’s supposed to be. He doesn’t realise he’s
missing something because he has no concept of anything else. Now I said that all of this could
be relevant to our world today and I want to clarify that connection. So think about how the
Gnostics were concerned with isolation and the importance of community and how that mirrors our
own relationship with digital technology. Just as the Gnostics warned against the dangers of
separation from the divine fullness and from one another our modern lives shaped
by technology and algorithms often emphasize individual experience and risk
creating new forms of isolation by reflecting on the Gnostic balance
between personal revelation and shared assembly we can better understand the
challenges of digital individualism and the need to maintain real connections
with others. The Office for National Statistics in the UK recorded approximately 8.6 million people
living alone in 2025. That works out to be around 29.5% of households. In the US, one-person
households were 13% in the 60s, but now they’re more than a quarter at around 28%, so more than
double in 60 years so our world has increasingly been built for one take a look at the algorithms
i know i talk about these a lot but the feed you receive is assembled for you and only for you
not one type of person you the industry calls this personalization and it’s very accurate
it’s the manufacturing of a private world at scale now the gnostics were very individualistic
people their whole position was that you reach a source by personal revelation you don’t need a
priest or a church or permission you don’t need hierarchy and they really didn’t want to be told
what to do but they still placed pairing at the center of the universe but at the same time they
didn’t believe your own personal revelation competed with your need for other people
it was individual gnosis and shared structure the human and the assembly and note that sophia
didn’t climb out of chaos by herself either she appealed 13 times and then she was saved
algorithms promise us the ultimate luxury a universe meticulously manufactured and curated
for an audience of one but as the gnostics warned over 1800 years ago an exclusively tailored world
is not a kingdom it’s a prison we can’t survive as isolated sparks spinning in a vacuum we require
the ecclesia we require a shared human structure to prevent our digital isolation from becoming
a dead end as you look at your screen today notice how much of our modern lives has been
built on the terrifying assumption that we are completely alone but i refuse to believe we are
