Chase Hughes reviews the ultimate open-world game: Earth.

Spawned onto the map in 1981, he has spent decades learning its mechanics and leveling up his character, and now he shares the hacks that let you play on your own terms. The built-in tutorial barely scratches the surface, your character’s deepest gifts and flaws are hidden on purpose, and the real game is won by knowing yourself deeply, closing the background programs that drain you, and designing quests that actually matter. From the five core mechanics to a secret rating system measured in love, adaptability, authenticity, and contribution, this is a map for escaping the NPC trap and climbing a leaderboard most players never discover.

VIDEO SYNOPSIS:

  • 00:05 – Opens by calling Earth the ultimate game — a tutorial and review promising a few hacks, and, closer to the end, the way to truly beat the game and land on the leaderboard.
  • 00:35 – The developers call your starting tutorial “childhood,” and it only covers survival. Earth deliberately hides your character’s real strengths and flaws, so playing well means digging until you truly know who you are and what you can become.
  • 01:41 – Bringing new characters into the game is a hard mission — Chase walks his own new player through the entire tutorial — and not every player gets the same start. No matter the intro, Earth hides its key details from every character.
  • 02:51 – The biggest mistake is assuming you already know your character. Going deeper upgrades Earth from a survival grind into a quest of self-Mastery, with new levels, unlocks, and rewards.
  • 03:27 – Nobody warns you about the background programs: unresolved tasks, emotional baggage, and habits running like fifty open tabs, quietly siphoning focus and wrecking performance.
  • 04:11 – Entropy is the silent killer — a slow drift into chaos unless you keep revisiting your systems. Beating it means studying the game’s rules and hidden mechanics, or hiring a coach to hack your account back on track.
  • 05:15 – One “glitch” to reset the character is psychedelics where legal. The more programs you close and the better you manage Entropy, the more you level up, earn, and actually enjoy the game.
  • 05:41 – The five core mechanics no AI can automate: connections and Love, production of meaningful work, mindset, character health, and the meta-mechanic of understanding the game itself.
  • 07:54 – Playing like a pro means designing your own quests. Steven Kotler‘s The Art of Impossible supplies the framework — Curiosity, Passion, Purpose, Autonomy, and Mastery — while you build quests that avoid your anti-vision, the dystopian future you refuse to live.
  • 10:36 – The NPC trap: social media, doom-scrolling, and endless tutorial-consumption convert real players into non-playable characters stuck on autopilot. An NPC reacts; a player chooses.
  • 12:55 – At the exit, the secret rating system judges five things: Love versus Fear, connection to others, adaptability, Authenticity, and Contribution.
  • 15:33 – The best players zoom out and write their own rules — it’s your game, your rules, and you’re never truly stuck unless you choose to be. Chase’s Final verdict: four and a half stars.
