Ammon Hillman treats the vampire not as fiction but as a category of ancient mystery, and starts in Homer’s Odyssey. He reads the passage in which Odysseus hides Scylla’s name from his crew because the men would crouch below deck in fear, and he notes that the daughter of the Lamia (Λάμια) fishes for the biggest and strongest sailors the way a fisherman hooks men, then eats them on the rock. The episode stresses that the vampire sings, and that the men, feet and hands in the air, scream as they are drawn up to their fate, which the episode calls the worst thing Odysseus ever saw.
The vampire has names and forms. Hillman introduces Herophile, the first Sibyl, whom the Greeks thought the daughter of Zeus and Lamia, and then turns to Pausanias’ story of Menippus, the attractive student of Apollonius of Tyana, and the beautiful woman-entity he intends to marry. The episode reads her as a phasma (φάσμα), an apparition, and shows Apollonius telling the boy he is burning a serpent and a serpent is burning him. The woman’s confession is central: she says she was fattening him with pleasure, and she names the prize as korēs akraiphnes haima (κόρης ἀκραιφνὲς αἷμα), the pure blood of a girl.
The claim extends to the New Testament. Hillman points to the rare word phoinizō (φοινίζω), to redden or become blood red, which he links to haimassō (αἱμάσσω), to draw blood, and to the verb empurple. He then reads Matthew’s demand to become like children as paideia (παιδεία), and the resurrected Jesus taking on different forms in Mark 16 as the trait of the vampire body. The episode closes on the image of Jesus crying out with the word Lamia on the cross and on Revelation’s command to christ the eyes, which the episode says is the drug that opens vision, just as it was for Apollonius of Tyana.
