Video Description
Ammon Hillman opens the Black Bible to the Acts of John, the early text the church kept out of the canon. When the emperor Domitian dares him to prove his God, John calls for a poison. He pours it into a bowl, adds water, and calls out in the name of Jesus Christ that he drinks the cup and mixes the drug with the holy spirit. The episode translates the command as a recipe: make it a potion of life and salvation, and the sacred cup that has just been eucharized. John then drinks it and stands there grinning while the whole court waits for him to die.
The demonstration follows. A man condemned to death is brought out, John swishes water around the cup’s dregs and hands it to him, and the condemned man falls dead on the spot (a story the episode treats as staged, with the court guards already on his side). The point is the drug class itself: the thanasimos pharmakon (θανάσιμον φάρμακον), the death inducer, paired with the theriac (θηριακή), the compound antidote that protects the one who takes both. The episode runs the same pattern through history: Mithridates drinks death inducers twice and cannot be poisoned, and Galen describes antidotes against the drugs introduced by drink or by the bites of the ioboloi (ἰοβόλοι), the venom-throwers.
The close is vocabulary. Greek medicine distinguishes the deleterion (δηλητήριον), the drug that wipes out, from the olethrion (ὀλέθριον), the one that degrades and destroys, and classifies plants, simples, and compounds with the same precision. At the end the episode names the state the whole rite produces: mania est en ekstasei (ἔκστασις), the reasoning swept out of itself, and says the Christing operation was never offered as a metaphor — power over death was the one demonstrable proof of the mystery.
