The hour starts inside a book most churches leave out: the Acts of Andrew and Matthias. The apostles roll lots, kléroi (κλῆροι), to divide the map, and Matthias draws the city of the people eaters, the Anthropophagoi (Ἀνθρωποφάγοι). The text says these people eat no bread, artos (ἄρτος), and drink no wine. Instead they eat the flesh of people and drink their blood, and any stranger who walks in is grabbed, blinded, and made to swallow a drink built from pharmakeia (φαρμακεία) and mageia (μαγεία).
Ammon Hillman translates what that drink does next. The crafted potion changes the heart and the mind, kardia (καρδία) and nous (νοῦς), and leaves the prisoner wandering inside a pen with the animals. Matthias alone stays clear-headed, and the reading offered is that Christ is itself a drug term, so a man already inside the craft cannot be knocked over by it, the way the old heroes took an antidote before they met a witch.
The last sequence reaches the temple. Jesus stands before two carved sphinxes, sphinges (σφίγγες), and he speaks to the stone, calling it an impression of heaven, a tupos ouranou (τύπος οὐρανοῦ). The show ties that operation to the emperor Julian, said to have last performed the old mystagogical act of making a statue come alive, and it reports that English tradition has quietly swapped the Greek phrase for something tamer. The deeper point repeated throughout is that the signs, the drugs, and the bringing-to-life all run on the same mystery.
