The source this time is the second-century Acts of John, one of the apocryphal books the church translated into Latin, cut down, and kept out of the canon. The episode presents one passage in which the aged apostle stands before the emperor Domitian and, when asked for proof of what Jesus can do, asks for a pharmakon thanasimon (φάρμακον θανάσιμον), a death-inducing drug. The claim is blunt: the youngest apostle is a trained drug user, taught by the same methods the text describes for the false prophet Alexander.
John mixes the drug with water, drinks it, and announces that he has made the cup into a drink of life and salvation, for the health of soul and body, for pepsis (πέψις), the working of the body’s tube, and for an unshakable faith. The word the episode highlights is the Eucharist, eucharistia (εὐχαριστία), read not as a simple blessing but as the moment a potentially deadly cup is declared. To prove the point, a condemned man is given the drink and dies on the spot, after which John raises him, tying the rite to the pairing of the death-inducer and the theriac (θηριακή) that Ammon Hillman says the medical texts describe.
The closing details are pharmacological. Mark 16:18 promises that believers will lift serpents and drink a thanasimon (θανάσιμον) without harm, and the seal of God is explained as an old drug practice, a small pill, trochiskos (τροχίσκος), stamped by the physician who made it, placed on the forehead to Christ the eyes.
