Video Description
The Scythians return with their bows. The episode reads the section of Aristotle’s school that says the Scythians use a drug to baptize their arrows, baptousi (βάπτουσι), and the drug is made from the echidna, the live-birth viper they keep and domesticate. Ammon Hillman breaks down the recipe the author gives: let human blood stand in a jar and putrefy, skim off the watery serum, the ichor, ichōr (ἰχώρ), and mix it with the viper’s substance to make a death inducer, thanasimon (θανάσιμον).
The process moves into the fire. The text names naphtha (νάφθα), and the show says this is the flame the tradition assigns to Medea, later called Medea’s fire by the Byzantine Suda. John’s burning hands that are not consumed are set beside the septic drugs, sēptika pharmaka (σηπτικὰ φάρμακα), linked through the snake called sēps (σήψ) to the word sepsis. Heracles’ christed shirt is the test case: poisoned with that drug, it scorches his skin and burns him inside as the echidna’s fire does.
From there the series follows the communion. Papias, writing within a generation of Jesus, tells of Barsabbas drinking the venom of the echidna in the name, or power, of the Christ and emerging unharmed, apathēs (ἀπαθής), one of the marvels, thaumata (θαύματα). The ichor of the echidna is called life, ambrosia, and the show ends on the line that the music, not just the drug, is the key that guides a person through the death state and back.
