Video Description
Ammon Hillman starts not with a creed but with a quiver. A viewer-sent find of a Pelasgian-era arrow still carries its poison, and the episode reads that object as the beginning of a technology: the arrow poison of the Scythian horse-women, the ioboloi (ἰοβόλοι), the venom-throwers whose craft later became the Christing mystery. A student’s chart of the Greek linguistic precursors of the name Maeve is shown, and the episode ties it to Boccaccio’s riddle: take some things out, stick what remains together the right way, and you get one lady through time, one perfect savior. The Aryans, it says, renamed themselves in her honor.
The middle of the hour is the Orphic chant. The episode runs the word thriambos (θρίαμβος) through the sources, the cry and hymn to Dionysus Triambos, lord with the ivy crown, before pulling Paul into the frame. In 2 Corinthians God is said to lead the procession, and the episode translates the verse so that the faithful are the euodia (εὐωδία), the fragrance of the Christ, a smell that moves from death to death and from life to life. The source and the fragrance are named as Chloe, the grace (χάρις), the perfumed odor (ὀσμή) the ancients said trails from Aphrodite’s body, and the incense that carried prayer to the gods.
The final movement is the blood. Reading Revelation backward from 16:6 to 16:3, the episode shows the blood of the holy and of the prophets poured out and given to drink, the angel pouring the drug vial into rivers and fountains until they become haima (αἷμα), blood, and the sea becoming blood as of the dead, haima hōs nekrou (αἷμα ὡς νεκροῦ). Lady Babylon, it says, is the woman intoxicated with the blood of the witnesses and seeing wonders. Acts 15’s warning to abstain from blood, the strangled, and porneia (πορνεία) is read as the ingredient list of the rite itself, and the episode ends on the spring of the Muse, the kranē ioeidea (κράνη ἰοειδής), traditionally the violet spring, under the surface the spring of venom.
