The lie named at the start is the claim that the Old Testament was written first in Hebrew and translated into Greek. Ammon Hillman holds up the count from the Israeli Academy: biblical Hebrew has about seven thousand words, while modern Hebrew swells to thirty-three thousand because it has been rebuilt. Against that he sets Hesychius, whose lexicon of difficult Greek words runs for page after page on the letter alpha alone, and he says that one letter contains more unusual words than the whole of ancient Hebrew.
The test case is the word mysterion (μυστήριον), mystery. Hebrew, the show argues, has no word for the operation, so the translators reach for a basic word meaning hidden, and the cult operation disappears. It points to Wisdom of Solomon and Sirach, works it says were never argued to come from Hebrew, using mysteria (μυστήρια), and to Daniel, where the king’s name is Nabouchodonosor (Ναβουχοδονόσορ) and his vision comes through an enypnion (ἐνύπνιον), the incubated vision of the mystery rather than an ordinary oneiros (ὄνειρος), a plain dream.
The drug link closes the argument. Aetius lists a four-drug medicine, tetrapharmakon (τετραφάρμακον), that some call mysterion, and the show reads mystery as an operation that works with pharmaka (φάρμακα). Daniel and his companions are eunuchs, eunouchoi (εὐνοῦχοι), and the episode repeats its line that eunuch boys have Christed testicles. The last claim is the largest: Apollo, with his music, medicine, prophecy, and poison, comes before both Jesus and Yahweh, and the mystery stays locked in the strings until the musician lets her voice out.
