Prophet Wars returns to the family behind the cult with a look at the Echidnaic dynasty. Ammon Hillman introduces Brian, a student who pushed through the Hansen and Quinn intensive Greek course at his teacher’s side, and the episode then opens the dynasty’s central claim: a half-virgin, half-viper priestess is not a fairy tale but a person shaped by compound drugs. The show says you do not get a Medusa without a standard regimen, and you do not get the famous antidote, the theriac, without a priesthood that prepares it.
The first source is Origen, a Christian writer, describing vipers and asps that lose the power of their venom because of the drugs, the pharmakon (φάρμακον), being used. The episode reads this as history: whole groups became immune to snake venoms through their own use. Galen then names the flesh of the echidna as a medicinal diet, a marvelous pharmacon, and the show points to the rare word theriotrophos (θηριοτρόφος), the ones nourished on that venomous creature, as the explanation for her strange power and hunger.
Other witnesses close the circle. A doctor described by Basileus uses the venom, the ios (ἰός), of echidnas to make a drug of salvation, a soterion (σωτήριον). Aristotle draws the line the episode loves: other snakes lay eggs, but the echidna alone gives live birth, and that is why she alone can give ionic life. From Herodotus the show traces Athens back to the snake-rooted king Kekrops and the Pelasgians, and it ends with the first child of the virgin nourished on ambrosia (ἀμβροσία), the template it says Christianity later borrowed.
