In this session Ammon Hillman opens a work he calls the liturgy of Helios Mithras, a Christian magical text, and points to the verb at its center: the christing. In the Greek, the initiate does not simply anoint a person but christs the opsis (ὄψις), the vision or gaze, with the mysterion (μυστήριον), a compound the episode calls the christed drug. The claim is that what English translations render as anointing was, in these sources, a pharmacological act meant to open a second kind of sight.
Part of the hour goes to a familiar phrase. The words usually read as Aramaic and translated little girl, rise are treated instead as Greek magic, because the word koum appears in the magical papyri in connection with the Gorgon and her song. The episode also reads the vowel sequence through the same rite, from alpha to omega, as the map of an initiation, and it names Beliar, one form of the death-daimon neku daimon (νεκυδαίμων), as the link by which the gates are unlocked. The language, the lesson says, is sound first, so the magic texts demand a flexibility with vowels that ordinary dialect work does not.
The aim of the whole process is immortalization, apathanatismos (ἀπαθανατισμός). To be born again, the text requires purification, fasting, and entering a state where the god’s sayings, or logoi (λόγοι), are spoken in mania. The episode presents this as the physics underneath what Jesus is described as doing, and it returns to the claim that a patient of Carl Jung described a vision that matched the Mithras liturgy before that document was published.
