Video Description
Simone Weil wrote one sentence in 1942 that this video from the Conscious Radical channel says diagnoses the whole of this century. The Gnostics had named the same prison almost two thousand years earlier, but Weil named what it costs to see it clearly.
The modern proof is laid out in plain numbers: billions of daily users, and hundreds of billions of dollars extracted from human attention. The video is not nostalgia for the past but an invitation to notice what an economy of attention does to a soul, and why inner clarity has always been the countermeasure.

Attention, Simone Weil wrote in 1942, is the rarest and purest form of generosity.
Now she wrote that in a notebook in occupied France with no audience and certainly no expectation of one.
But today, Meta’s annual report gives a monetary value for what she said was priceless.
So I came to Weil a few years ago and that one sentence really stayed with me.
Then when I came across Meta’s quarterly numbers, it made sense on another level.
Meta’s most recent annual report, which was filed with the SEC in January, runs to over
a hundred pages.
Most of it is the standard corporate language that any major company files, but there is
a section, Serious Investors Read First, and it has its own vocabulary.
The two metrics Meta tells the world are central to its business are these, daily active people,
average revenue per person.
So notice the language, not users but people.
Now Meta updated that term in 2024 because the shift was deliberate.
People is softer, people is more humane, people is what you use when the term users has started
to sound exactly like what it is.
So these are the numbers.
3.56 billion people on average use a Meta product on a given day in March 2026.
the family of apps facebook instagram whatsapp messenger the average revenue per person in 2025
was 57.03 per person per year globally the total revenue in 2025 was just over 200 billion dollars
and that’s up 22 on the year before so if you were to read those numbers in veils light the form 10k
is a quarterly accounting of how much generosity has been processed and at
what margin per person. We have been inventoried and that’s the word for
what’s happened. What Vale called the rarest form of generosity has been
inventoried by people who know exactly what it’s worth, their numbers say so and
they publish them every quarter by law to investors who require them. What Vale
was naming in that Marseille notebook is something the wellness language can’t
quite reach. Attention is the substance through which you love, the substance through which you
see another person clearly, the substance through which you make anything that matters. Attention
is the way humans until very recently were human. Iris Murdoch read Vale obsessively and her whole
moral philosophy is built on Vale. In 1970 Murdoch defined love as the just and loving gaze directed
upon an individual reality. That’s well rendered in Murdoch’s English, two women years apart naming
the same thing. And if they’re right, 16 hours a day in the platforms wears down something more
than your time. It wears down the faculty itself, the faculty through which you can love anything
at all. So let’s look at this in today’s life lens. You’re meant to read one email and 20 minutes
later you’re in a feed and you don’t even remember opening it or you’ve sat
down to read a book and a message pings on your phone before the paragraph
finishes perhaps you spent the day attending to nothing in particular and
there is a tiredness attached to that and it’s a different kind of tiredness
from work it feels like being underwater it feels like if you let yourself notice
it like grief the diagnosis everyone arrives with is some version of
distraction, burnout, anxiety, brain fog. We have thousands of words for what’s happening.
Now Vale wasn’t the first to see this. Almost 2,000 years before her someone wrote
the kingdom of the father is spread upon the earth and people do not see it. That’s the gospel
of Thomas, one of the Christian texts that was buried for 1600 years. Split a piece of wood I am
there lift up the stone you will find me there the claim is that the divine is
already here it’s in the wood it’s under the stone is spread on the earth and the
only thing keeping you from seeing it is the kind of attention you’ve been taught
to use there were Gnostics who read this differently the Sethians and the later
Manichaeans who treated the world as a prison and awakening as an escape that
you would need to get out you would need to ascend and not come back but the
Valentinians went in a different direction. The Gospel of Philip, the
Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Truth. These are about sight, that the world
stays but your eye changes. Stay and see things differently. What you see when the
eye changes is that the kingdom has been here all along. And this is what links
Vale to the desert. Her attention is Thomas’s eye, the just and loving gaze. A
A gaze that lets the thing be what it is.
The kind of looking that in Vail’s language is generosity and in Thomas’ language is
the moment the kingdom becomes visible.
Two thousand years apart and they had the same observation.
The world becomes transparent under the right kind of attention.
And that’s what the platforms have inventoried.
Generosity got priced and our sight and our attention has got measured.
The faculty being worn down is the eye that could see the kingdom on the floor of your
kitchen if it weren’t being trained 16 hours a day to look for the next thing.
The Valentinians also added that awakening occurs within a household and the household
is still mostly asleep.
The Gospel of Truth describes the unawakened as people fast asleep, caught in distressing
and violent circumstances, fleeing and chasing and fighting in dreams.
awakening is the moment you realize none of it was real the rest of the household
the text says is still asleep still inside the nightmare and they’re angry
at being disturbed and they mistake your wakefulness for noise so that’s the cost
of waking up you see and once you’ve seen you owe something to the work to
the people around you to the kingdom spread on the earth and the Gnostic
communities understood this and they stayed in the world deliberately awake
on behalf of the others, until the others woke up too. Good for the one who returns and awakens.
That’s how the gospel of truth puts it. Returns, not escapes. Returns to the household, to the
kitchen, to the world, with the eye changed. Vale understood this. She refused to eat more than the
ration available to civilians in occupied France. She declined baptism because she didn’t want to
be separated from unbelievers. She died at 34, possibly because she lived her own claim too
literally. The cost of attention as generosity taken seriously is real, and the household will
not always thank you. If anyone selling you the language of awakening forgets to mention this,
then they haven’t read the literature. If Vale is right, and the Valentinians are right,
the question is what you intend to do with your attention once you’ve recognised what it is.
so what deserves your full attention and what doesn’t what would it mean to give the just and
loving gaze to your own life to the person across the table to the work in front of you asking to
be loved into existence because the platforms won’t stop and the architecture is not going to
soften the attention being extracted is extracted on purpose by people who know exactly what it’s
worth, but the eye is yours. The kingdom is on the ground. What you do with the looking is not their
decision.
