Ammon Hillman continues where the last episode stopped, with the dithyram and the blood still warm. The hour opens on the Bacchic mirror, the question written on the door: who are you? It announces that about a dozen preachers among the audience have stopped preaching after following the sources, and frames the project as freeing people with reason rather than selling them anything. Then it takes the stage itself as the origin, the theater where the procession, the pompē (πομπή), grew out of the hymns of victory and the iambos (ἴαμβος), the taunting, lampooning verse the episode credits to Medea.
The Greek machinery is the center. Hesychius defines a cousin of thriambos (θρίαμβος) with the word manteia (μαντεία), the mantic, prophetic art, and the episode notes the oracle alternates between Apollo and Dionysus every third year. Aeschylus calls the Etruscans a drug-making people, a pharmakopoion ethnos (φαρμακοποιὸν ἔθνος), and the Tyrrhenian pirates are named as the traffickers whose sea carries both the drugs and the people. The channel reads the early church’s letter of Jude as the fight over a sect practicing a seed and blood communion, and Paul as the one who knew both sides because he was immune to the viper’s venom.
The close is the Homeric Hymn to Dionysus, translated as the origin of the ecstasy. Dionysus, glorious son of Semele, stands on the shore as a boy in the bloom of youth with dark wavy hair and a purple cloak (πορφυρέῳ χλαίνῃ). Tyrrhenian sailors seize him for ransom, but the fetters fall from his hands and feet, wine bubbles over the ship, vines and ivy spread, and a lion and a bear appear until the men leap into the sea and turn into dolphins. The pilot alone is spared, and the god tells him: I am Dionysus, the loud roarer, whom Cadmus’s daughter Semele bore. The poem’s lesson is stated plainly: no one can make a sweet song without remembering the god, and every mystery hymn traces itself back to the honoring of the mother.
