The centerpiece here is a fifth-century text the episode says the muse handed over only the night before: an encomium on John the Baptist by Chrysippus, a presbyter in Jerusalem. In this telling, John the Prodromos, the one who comes before, is not a meek hermit but a feared and honored figure, and the men who fear him are set against the Bacchic women he fights. The show calls it a buried text, preserved in Greek and set aside once the church had written its own story.
The drama is the marriage of Herod and the beheading. Herodias, the wife Herod should not have taken, is described in the Greek as the darkening of truth, the guide through oistromania (οἰστρομανία), and the dagger of the devil, a title Ammon Hillman says confirms the root the series has been following, the sigma, tau, and rho in oistros (οἶστρος), the gadfly. Her daughter, the girl who dances, is called the new drakaina (δράκαινα) and the assembly of demons, the one who receives the head of the prophet who attacked the line of the echidna (ἔχιδνα).
The last part moves that story into the New Testament. Mark 6 shows Salome working her magic on Herod, who promises half his kingdom, and the episode reads the dance as the same art the text describes, the use of phantasia (φαντασία), the creation of an image, and ekstasis phrenōn (ἔκστασις φρενῶν) to bend the king. The claim is that the Baptist, a pneumatic philosopher with true parrēsia (παρρησία), came against a priesthood run by women from Medea onward, and that the head on the platter is the decapitation of the older cult’s victory.
