Ammon Hillman opens this episode of the Acts of Thomas with a walk into a cemetery and a confession he attributes to the devil. Thomas, the twin Christ, follows the voice of the kurios (κύριος), the Lord, to a body lying off the road, and the episode flags the exact word: the boy is a peirasmos (πειρασμός), a temptation. Thomas prays to the Lord of the living and the dead and summons Jesus in vampire form, and a great dragon comes out, a magos (μάγος) who says he struck the boy and killed him because the boy had defiled the woman he followed.
The dragon’s speech is the heart of the episode. He says he saw a woman who was horaya (ὡραία), ripe and in season, followed and stalked her, and found her with the boy, the two of them exchanging kisses and then koinonia (κοινωνία), which the episode again reads not as fellowship but as sexual union, and so he waited and put the boy to death. The dragon names himself the one who crossed the barrier into paradise and spoke with Eve, the one who set Cain ablaze to kill his brother, and the one who planted the thorn caltrops in the garden, call the triboloi (τρίβολοι). He also says he is the herpustes (ἑρπυστής), the creeping serpent, and that the tail wrapped in his mouth is his ura (οὐρά), the private part the episode links to the ouroboros sealed on the chest of an initiate.
The close is the cure and the scale of the claim. The dragon bends over the boy and sucks the venom, the ios (ἰός), out of the wound, and the boy’s flesh, stained purple, porphyra (πορφύρα), lightens as the poison is drawn; the revived boy falls at Thomas’ feet and calls him a man of more than one shape. The episode compares the dragon’s death to the death of Judas, swollen and burst from the backside by an overdose of the blister beetle, and it notes that cannabis carried the street name star, the drug of the throne of Lucifer. The boy then begs to be sealed again and to see the hidden one, and the episode closes by redefining the original persecution of the Christians as simple justice, not martyrdom.
