Video Description
This workshop is a word hunt through the early Christian writings, tracking every place Satan shows up. It starts in the Testament of Solomon from the third century, where David sees Bathsheba naked in the bath and Satan embateuei (ἐμβατεύει), steps in, to drop sexual desire into his heart. The same verb shows up in Colossians 2:18, where Paul warns against the worship of angels and the things seen while entering into the mystery. The point is that in these old Greek texts, the devil’s work is the same as the mystery: desire, entry, and initiation, not a story about a red man with horns.
From the Bible the search takes a turn through grammar. Ammon Hillman opens Dionysius, the Alexandrian grammarian, who lists the Greek words for sword — aor (ἄορ), xiphos (ξίφος), machaira (μάχαιρα), spathē (σπάθη), phasganon (φάσγανον) — and then sorts the verbs into three voices, energeia, pathos, and mesotēs, active, passive, and middle. The argument is that the Greeks named and mapped their own language while the old church writers were still working out what to call the devil. The lesson folds back into the Testament of Solomon, where the works of Satan are called athesma (ἄθεσμα), things outside the thesmos (θεσμός), outside the law.
The last stretch opens the life of Mary Magdalene, who is said to carry seven demons, and reads the title Magdal back through the Scythian word for a female magus, a drug-wielding woman. The clean term in the margin is zizanion (ζιζάνιον), the weed that grows in wheat, the darnel Theophrastus described as satanic. The episode ends on the hunt itself: Jude says even Michael did not dare rebuke the devil, and the dream, enypnion (ἐνύπνιον), is the old path the writers kept walking.
