Ammon Hillman promises the crucifixion seen for the first time and reads Mark 15 as a drug operation that went wrong. Before the cross, Jesus is given esmyrnismenos (ἐσμυρνισμένος) wine mixed with myrrh, and the crowd soon forms shouting staurōson auton (σταύρωσον αὐτόν), crucify him, while Jesus is described as confused and unwilling to answer. The episode says the crowd knew what a christos was, and that Barabbas, a man held for stasis (στάσις), insurrection, was chosen over a man they saw as a different kind of offender, a lestes (λῃστής), the word Mark uses for the two others crucified beside him.
On the cross, the claim is that Jesus was finishing a rite, not dying of crucifixion. He shouts in a great voice, breathes out the pneuma (πνεῦμα), and takes oxos (ὄξος) from the sponge. In the paraphrase of John by Nonnus, that drink is called drimus (δριμύς), pungent and sharp, and an antidoton (ἀντίδοτον), an antidote to the visionary bread; then Jesus leans back and says tetelestai (τετέλεσται), a telestes (τελεστής) one who has completed the initiation. The episode calls the sweat on his face hydrōs (ἱδρώς), like the gum that weeps from a poppy, and traces his troubled state to adēmoneō (ἀδημονέω), the same word found in the Hippocratic Epidemics.
The origin of the culture is mapped to Anatolia. Mount Tmolus and the temple of Artemis at Sardis are named as the source of the maenads and the Christing drugs, and the voice of the Apocalypse tells Sardis to keep the name of the initiates and the white garments, while the one who conquers keeps an onoma (ὄνομα) in the book of Zoe. The closing argument returns to the garden, the hymns, and the beds prepared for the students, and to the claim that Jesus was arrested as a trafficker of children and revived by the same mystery he died performing.
