Ammon Hillman dives into the scholia, the notes of ancient grammarians, to bring back a nameless source, and the episode keeps its focus on Apollonius of Rhodes and the Argonautica, a work about Medea. The opening image is the woman at dawn, gathering her disordered blonde hair, then brightening her skin with a Christing ointment of nectar and an unguent the text calls aloiphē (ἀλοιφή), a cream for cleansing rather than a modern shower. She is the korē (κόρη), the virgin, and the episode says the whole range of terms for her, parthenos (παρθένος) and parthenikē (παρθενική), points to the same figure put on the hill in Athens.
The detail-work unpacks her household. Medea has twelve companions, her age-mates and same-stage helpers, described in the Greek as not yet using the marriage bed, and the show treats that dozen as the model for the later twelve, one for each sign of the aion (αἰών). The drug she keeps is named the prometheion (προμήθειον), a compound used in fiery trials, and the text says a person anointed with it cannot be hurt by weapons or fire, while the nightly sacrifice is performed for the only-begotten korē. The commentator explains the offer as fumigation, thumiamata (θυμιάματα), with the tripod as the device that creates the smoke.
The ending is a small surprise drawn from the congregation’s chat.
