Video Description
Reading the second-century Physiologus, a text whose author is unknown but whose ideas were used by other Christian writers, Ammon Hillman translates the entry usually called On the Gorgon, peri tōn Gorgonōn (περὶ τῶν Γοργόνων). The Gorgon is described not as the monster of later art but as a woman of perfect form, a eumorphos pornē (εὔμορφος πόρνη), whose hair is serpents and whose face is the face of death. At a certain time she sings and dances with joy, on the day called her orexis (ὄρεξις), the inward drive and compulsion, and at that moment she becomes Nemesis.
The episode then heads into the ritual half of the text. An enchanter, an epōidos (ἐπῳδός), the one who controls the song, learns through the constellations which day her orexis will fall. He digs a hole from a higher place, tells her to place her head into it, and stands with his back to her so he will not see her face and die. He decapitates her with a blade and hides the head in a vessel, and from then on he brings the head out to paralyze anyone he wishes to turn to stone, the very image the rock and pebble imagery in the episode turns on.
The final move is the claim the series has been building toward. As the Gorgon speaks, the episode translates her invitation, come to me and take full delight in this flesh, and connects it to the words it says were later turned into a command to eat flesh and drink blood. In this telling those words were taken from the Echidna priesthood, the women’s cult that ran the Christing and supplied the water of life. The Gorgon, in other words, is not the enemy the texts cast out, but the savior in her own right.
