Video Description

The Book of the Watchers, the oldest part of 1 Enoch, opens with two hundred beings on a mountain who decide to stop merely watching. This video from the Conscious Radical channel reads that decision as a study in authority and doubt, what happens when a power assigned only to observe chooses to intervene.

The text was buried and recovered, and the video asks what it teaches now: about knowledge, boundaries, and what humans may or may not be ready to carry. It is told as a story rather than a verdict, leaving the old witness to ask its question again.

200 beings stood on a mountain in roughly 300 BC and decided to stop watching. They’d been assigned
to observe humanity but they chose instead to intervene. The text that recalls this decision
was buried, recovered and is still asking us what we’re supposed to learn from it. In the last piece
I covered who Enoch was and why his testimony was suppressed and this piece is about what he
witnessed because the foundation of that material is not actually a story about
angels and giants it’s a study in what happens when authority overreaches its
function the text uses a specific word in Aramaic the original language of the
oldest sections of one Enoch the watches are called even the word means the
wakeful ones or the ones who don’t sleep the Greek translation kept that meaning
So the watches are not, in the text’s own vocabulary, a generic class of angels.
They are specifically a class defined by their attention.
And their function is the function of observation.
The hierarchy in 1 Enoch is layered.
The most high sits at the top.
Below the most high are the archangels, Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel and others,
who occupy the highest functional positions in the cosmic order.
now below them are several classes of angels with very specific roles the watchers are one of those
classes their position is not the lowest it is in fact very significant they’re the class whose job
is to observe what happens on the earth and to maintain the record of it so think about what
that means in a cosmos where the most high already knows everything the existence of a class of
beings whose entire function is to watch is strange. The Most High doesn’t need a class of
watchers to be informed, which suggests the text is doing something else with the figure of the
watchers. It’s making a structural argument about what observation is for. The most coherent reading
is this, that the watchers exist because the cosmic order requires a separation between
observation and action the most high acts the archangels act humans act but the watches don’t
act their function is to hold the record to witness to maintain the integrity of what has
been observed by keeping themselves outside of it that separation is not incidental it’s the entire
reason their class exists the watches were created to demonstrate that observation is a discipline
distinct from intervention and that maintaining that discipline is itself a form of cosmic work
but this is the function they abandoned the text gives us reasons and none of them are simple
the first reason is desire chapter 6 verse 1 and it came to pass when the children of men
had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters and the angels
the children of the heavens saw and lusted after them the descent begins with seeing the text is
precise about this the watches were doing their job they were observing and the job itself became
the vector of their fall they couldn’t unsee what they had been assigned to see and so the function
corrupted itself but the text does not let lust carry the whole argument because the catalogue
of teachings that follow is not a consequence of taking wives it’s a separate project the
watchers brought down weaponry cosmetics astrology enchantment divination and writing each named
watcher corresponds to a discipline the teaching was not incidental to the descent it was the second
transgression that was larger than the first the second reason the text gives is that the watchers
wanted to be loved they wanted to be chosen by humans they had been assigned only to watch
that their teachings are gifts they are seductions a zazzle teaches cosmetics so that the women he
wants will be more beautiful to him barack all teaches astrology so that humans will look to
the stars he understands each watcher hands over the piece of knowledge that makes him irreplaceable
to the species he has fallen for there is a third reason the text gestures at but doesn’t fully name
it’s the only one that in my reading sits underneath the other two the watches were
ordered to observe a species that was loved by the most high in a way that they themselves weren’t
the hierarchy of the cosmos had placed them above humans and function but below humans in destiny
they were eternal and they were powerful they had access to the heavens but the text is clear
that humans were the project humans were the species whose development the most high was
specifically interested in the watches were the staff and the humans were the children
you can see this in the way that the text describes the petition scene in chapters 12 to 16
which we covered in the enoch piece when the watches are condemned and they go looking for
someone to intercede on their behalf they don’t go to the archangels they don’t appeal up the chain
to their fellow celestial beings they go to enoch they go to a human because the text understands
even after the descent has happened that humans hold a kind of standing in the cosmic order that
the watchers don’t the watchers in their final humiliation have to ask a member of the species
they corrupted to plead their case for them that’s a position they couldn’t bear and the descent read
this way is not really about lust or vanity the deeper motive is that the watches saw the
asymmetry of love in the cosmic order and decided to do something about it they couldn’t be the
favoured species but they could instead accelerate the favoured species into a development that it
wasn’t ready for the technologies the watchers brought down weren’t given out generosity they
were given out of resentment the watchers handed humanity the tools of its own corruption dressed
as gifts because they couldn’t tolerate a structure in which they were eternal but not beloved now
this reading is not stated explicitly in the text it’s the reading you arrive at when you put the
descent the teachings and the petition scene together and ask what the underlying motive has
to be for all three to make sense the watchers didn’t break their function out of curiosity they
broke it because they couldn’t accept the cosmic order that they had been assigned to maintain so
what is this text for what’s it doing in front of you 3 000 years after it was written the answer
depends on what kind of reader you are and the text does something unusual it supports being read
on multiple levels simultaneously and each level produces a different but coherent application
there is the historical mystical reading these were beings this happened the cosmos contains
entities the modern world has lost the vocabulary to describe that the text is a literal account of
an event whose aftermath we’re still living inside if you bring this lens the text is a record of
what was and the application is to recover the cosmology it describes there is a psychological
reading the watches are aspects of the human mind the descent is the moment we begin using
capacities our consciousness is not yet integrated enough to handle every human in this reading
contains the watchers the parts of the self that observe but can’t tolerate observing without
intervening that hand over capabilities before they’re integrated that corrupt the development
they were meant to support so the application is internal and you do the work of recognizing
the watcher pattern in yourself before you can see it operating anywhere else there is the political
reading the watches are a parable about authority that overreaches its remit every institution
operating outside its function is doing what the watches did the application is structural you
learn to ask of any authority is this entity doing what it was authorized to do or has it stepped
outside its function and started intervening in what it was only meant to observe there is the
sociological reading the watches are a recurring pattern in how civilizations rise and corrupt
themselves every civilization reaches a point where its custodians become its operators
where the people who were supposed to hold the record start writing the record where the
institutions that were supposed to observe a culture start engineering it. The application
is historical, you can read the pattern across centuries and you watch it repeat. So the question
is whether the writers of 1 Enoch intended all of these readings and the honest answer is that
we don’t know. The text was composed across roughly three centuries by multiple authors
working in different communities probably with different intentions the book of the
watchers is the oldest section which may have been written as a literal cosmological account
by people who believed exactly what the surface of the text says the animal apocalypse written
150 years later during the maccabean revolt took the same framework and used it allegorically to
read the contemporary political crisis of its own time different authors different intentions with
the same source material which suggests something important the text was already in its own period
of composition being used on multiple levels the framework was treated as productive precisely
because it could be applied to different questions by different readers the maccabean writer did not
believe the greek occupation of jerusalem was carried out by literal supernatural beings he
believed the pattern the watches represented was operating in his present and he used the framework
to make sense of it he read the text politically the kumram community copying the same text a
century or two later may have read it more literally their other manuscripts suggest
they took the cosmology seriously both readings co-existed inside the same community of texts
the text in other words was always meant to be read on more than one level not because the
original authors anticipated every later reader but because the framework itself is structured
to support multiple applications and that’s what makes it durable and that’s why it survived 3000
years of attempts to suppress, allegorise, literalise or domesticate. The text resists
being settled into a single reading and the resistance is the gift. What we take from it now
is a reading practice. The text trains a kind of attention. It teaches you to ask of any authority
structure in front of you whether the entities operating inside it are doing what they were
assigned to do or whether they have stepped outside their function. It
teaches you to ask of any new technology arriving in your life whether the
development of your own capacity to handle it has kept pace with the
capability itself. It teaches you to ask when a gift has been handed to you what
relationship the giver has to the species you belong to and whether the
gift is actually serving you or making the giver more irreplaceable. These are
questions the modern world is set up to ask but they are exactly the questions
one Enoch was preserved to teach they watched until they didn’t they taught
what wasn’t theirs to teach they were unseated by what they took and the
pattern hasn’t stopped the text does not tell you what it is it tells you what it
saw whether you read it as a literal account of cosmological events a
psychological map of the human mind a political parable about authority
operating outside its function or a sociological pattern that repeats across
civilizations that is for you to decide the text supports all of those readings
and others I haven’t named the decision belongs to you the reader what it does
not support is being domesticated into a single reading by an institution that
has decided what the framework is allowed to mean every attempt to settle
one enoch into one official interpretation so the church’s literalist suppression the modern
academy’s purely allegorical reading the contemporary spiritualist confidence gnosticism
they run into the same problem the text resists it and it’s been resisting for about three thousand
years what it asks of you is not that you accept a particular reading but it’s that you do the
reading yourself that you sit with the discomfort of a text that doesn’t settle that you let the
framework operate on whatever question you bring to it without insisting that the framework give
you a single answer the watches stepped outside their function because they could not tolerate
being observers they couldn’t tolerate sitting with what they saw without intervening the reading
practice one enoch trains 3 000 years later is the opposite it’s the practice of staying inside your
own function of observing without overreaching of letting the text say what it says without telling
it what it has to mean and that’s what was buried but it’s also what survived and it’s in your hands
now.
