Ammon Hillman promises the secret name of Rome and begins with a lost work of Galen restored in a 2013 classics dissertation by Robert Lee at Essex. Galen describes a Roman knight named Piso whose beloved son was injured on horseback during an initiation into the mysteries, and in the man’s house Galen notices theriac scrolls. What follows is a trace of the theriac through the Julian clan, from Julius Caesar to Augustus, Nero, and Marcus Aurelius, an imperial family that all partook.
The proof is the vocabulary. Galen uses the word euangelion (εὐαγγέλιον), gospel, for the roster of what each drug compound does, its good news of salvation, and Hillman reads that as a pharmaceutical gospel long before the gospels. In Aeschylus, Prometheus says he gave mortals medicines to eat, medicines to drink, and medicines to anoint, chrio (χρίω). Marcus Aurelius, Galen says, took the theriac daily, grew dependent on opium, and looked ten years younger, while Mithridates and Cleopatra could not poison themselves because the antidotes already circulated in them.
The name unfolds through the woman behind the cup. The formula addressed to Nero holds the dark harbor and the potion of Medea, and Hillman pronounces the name Medwa, resting a digamma in the middle of Medea, the same hidden letter he points to in the fear, deos (δέος), and the root from which the word medicine descends. The close returns to Mark 16, the snakes and the thanasimon, the death-bringing compound, and the claim that the power of Rome is the adamantine freedom that comes once the name is found.
