Video Description
A dead Athenian opens the episode, and the voice of democracy comes through the grave. Ammon Hillman reads the old civic oath: the citizen swears to kill, whether by word, by deed, or by vote, whoever overthrows the democracy or climbs into power as a tyrant, and if someone else kills that tyrant, the killer stands clean before gods and daemons. The episode calls it the same promise the defenders of American democracy still swear, and the point of the vote, it says, is exactly that — to stop the tyrant, not to coronate him. From there the hour turns to two Phrygian mystics, Sabazius (Σαβάζιος) and Hypta (Ὕπτα), the god who sewed Dionysus into his thigh and the goddess with the beautiful cheeks who leads the mystic rites.
The middle of the episode is a debate over the Book of Enoch. A televangelist clip says the book has no claim on the New Testament; the episode answers with a 1912 edition of the Greek fragments that prints Jude and Enoch side by side, showing the wording is the same, and argues that Enoch shaped Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John more than any other book. In the text, the sons of God take wives and teach them drug craft, song, and root cutting, and one teacher, Azazel, teaches warcraft and how to bring the earth-born metals out of the ground — the same metallica (μεταλλικά), the dug-up drugs, the channel keeps returning to. The episode says Jesus himself quoted Enoch, for the saying about serving God and mammon, and that without Enoch there is no Jesus and no Judaism at all.
The closing seals the christing claim. The Nereids, the sea nymphs, christ themselves with nectar while the sons of Dawn sing their mourning songs, and the episode reads christ back into the Greek khrisma (χρῖσμα), the ointment put into a body. Callimachus is quoted saying Athena, the virgin, accepts no alabastron (ἀλάβαστρον) and no myrrh, because she takes no part in sex, and the episode states plainly that christing is a sexual act, one that puts a person into a state of lucid arousal. Heracles and Castor, it says, were christed too, and the last word Jesus calls out from the cross is the ecstatic cry of the same mystery — the word that reaches out to Hypta.
