Ammon Hillman closes the series with Meat Man Thomas and a descent into hell. He uses the same Acts of Thomas story of the boy who murdered the girl after taking the Eucharist and having his hands go numb, and turns it into a curing operation. When Thomas finds the girl dead, he calls the scene a mania-inducing mingling and sees the sexual drive, the epithumia (ἐπιθυμία), as the snake’s work. He commands that water be brought, and he invokes the living waters and the power of the Holy Spirit so the boy can wash and be filled again, before giving him another dose in the form of the seal.
The tour of Tartarus is the heart. The girl describes a dark man leading her to pits that stink and steam, with blazing fire and wheels of fire, trochoi (τροχοί), which the episode reads not as wheels but as drug discs like the trohiskoi (τροχίσκοι) tablets, and the souls suspended and struggling under the influence. She sees fetuses, brephē (βρέφη), fighting one another, women held in a bog of worms, skōlēkes (σκώληκες), and liars hung by their tongues, while tongues of fire burn, which the episode links to the charismatic movement.
The surprise ending is that this world is already the underworld. Hillman points to the metallica (μεταλλικά), the dug-up mineral drugs that both Galen and Dioscorides describe, the Lemnian seal tablets of medicinal earth that Galen visited the island to buy, and the gumnocephaloi (γυμνοκέφαλοι), the shaven-headed ones, before the girl’s tour becomes the channel’s own conclusion. The episode closes with the claim that life itself is the purgation, that this is the kingdom of the devil and a place of justice where the sold and the trafficked are shown what was done to them, and it recites the initiates’ own words that they left mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, and children for aionic life.
