Ammon Hillman says the count changed the argument. After Danny Jones suggested assembling every reference to Christing, the episode searched the full digital corpus of Greek literature and estimates somewhere between thirty and forty thousand hits. Most, it says, are later Byzantine Christian usage. But thousands are older and unchristian: Christing a wound, Christing the eyes, Christing cloth, arrows, nares, urethras, and bowels, all through Greek medical and tragic writers. The point is that Christing was never a rare spiritual event; it was a common drug operation that the word carried for a thousand years before anyone used it as a title.
The examples come fast. Homer’s Aphrodite is Christed with ambrosia (ἀμβροσία) after her bath, dressed only in her girdle. Thetis Christed the infant Achilles with the same immortal substance after burning off his mortality at night. Odysseus, at the opening of the Odyssey, goes looking for an androphonon pharmakon (ἀνδροφόνον φάρμακον), a man-killing drug, to Christ his arrows. Sophocles has Deianira Christ the wool that will carry the centaur’s blood, and the cloth bursts into flame in the sun. Even in Prometheus Bound, the chorus fears what the Christing drug brings, and the passage names oistros (οἶστρος).
The purple ties it all together. Photius records that the purple was once called lurgos, so the dye hides under other names. Galen prescribes epichristō with the black collyrium, kollyrion (κολλύριον), the same eye drug the Book of Revelation tells the blind church to buy. Nikephoros then calls the substance theouphantos porphyra (θεουφαντος πορφύρα), the purple that makes God visible, and the episode reads that as the technical heart of prophecy: in antiquity, it says, there were no prophets without the purple, and no Christing without the drug.
