Ammon Hillman opens this Renaissance Portal with an old Greek word most Bibles keep hidden: the Arai (ἀραί), the curses, the same powers Athens later renamed the Eumenides (Εὐμενίδες), the kindly ones, and Rome called the Furiae. They are, in his reading, not fiction. Shed blood, he says, produces an avenging spirit, and the episode points to the song of the chorus where the curses cry epalalaxon (ἐπαλάλαξον), from alalazō (ἀλαλάζω), the same shout of the Bacchic rite. Under the dead bodies, he says, there is wealth, and where blood is buried, the curse follows the bloodline.
The Greek gives each Fury her job. Erinys (Ἐρινύς) is drawn from erinō (ἐρίνω), I hunt or I persecute, so the blood-stained are the hunted. Tisiphone (Τισιφόνη) carries tisis (τίσις), the repayment, joined to phonos (φόνος), murder. Megaera (Μέγαιρα) is the one who finds the person given too much, the one without honor or integrity, and punishes the liar. The episode reads the three as priestesses of the mystery, daughters of Night, and ties them to the Orphic line where they are born from the blood that fell from the genitals of Uranus when the sky was cut away from Gaia (Γαῖα). It is a physics, he says: blood creates fury, and fury comes for the one who shed it.
The hour then turns that machinery on the present as a history lesson, not an endorsement.
