Video Description

The question in the title comes from a Danny Jones interview with Bart Ehrman, and the episode treats it as the moment a famous biblical scholar is handed one line of Greek he cannot translate on camera. Ehrman first says the word christos (χριστός) used to mean nothing but anointed, a title running back to the Hebrew mashiach, and that no one would find the word before the Septuagint. Then he is shown the passage and slows down.

The line is from Euripides, the speech where Phaedra asks what kind of pharmakon (φάρμακον) she is looking at: the christon (χριστόν), the one you rub on, or the poton (ποτόν), the one you drink. Reading the grammar, Ep. Hillman’s account here is careful: the sentence defines a Christ as one of two drug routes, and the screen walks through the contrast between the two words, plus the LSJ entry that lists Aeschylus, Euripides, Hippolytus, Theocritus, and then the Septuagint as the places the word appears. The emphasis is that this is not theology but the language itself on display.

The rest of the hour follows Ehrman’s other arguments. He points to Semitisms, Hebrew-style grammar leaking into the Greek, and picks the phrase the spirit of holiness as a fingerprint of a Hebrew original. The reply is that this is just the genitive, the plain possessive, that Greek uses all the time, and a dictionary page is shown with hodos (ὁδός), the road or way, doing the same work. He also says the seven-thousand-word count for Hebrew is only a sample of what survives, while the episode answers with Julius Africanus, who is cited as saying the rabbis of his day did not even have basic words and spoke Greek instead. The end keeps the claim simple, with Ammon Hillman pointing out that chriō (χρίω) is a drug process, and that the text has been there the whole time.

Boy, what are you in for today?
What are you in for today, people?
We have witnessed something absolutely gorgeous.
We have seen for the first time,
we have seen the penetration and the destruction of the lies.
We have seen the beginning of the end of the tyranny of lies.
We saw, through Iron Danny Jones, we saw a great biblical scholar fall.
And Danny did it. Danny did it.
Now, how did this happen?
How did this all come to be?
Right now, on other channels, people are talking about this interview.
live and they’re saying my god man what is the outcome and it’s being played a very specific
way in certain places depending what happened people danny jones happened i told you he was
iron with an assist from steve with an assist from steve steve threw him his lightsaber
he threw him his lightsaber you see danny danny was like look amen what if you just get all the
references can you get me those references to christ and christing i said sure sure right
i hadn’t thought of it i had not thought of it why not just just bring them all out bring out all
that voice of the muse and let her conquer the lies and that’s what we did make no mistake
satanic congregation bart erman professor university north carolina chapel hill bible
studies cross-appointed classics make no mistake you watched him fall translation took him down
it was not anything done by me. It was the muse. Danny Mary gave her voice and she set it up so
beautifully too. She set it up so gorgeously. The man would boast. The man would boast when he
entered in. The man would boast. Tell me, how much is the Bravo charging these days? It’s expensive.
if this was the top of the top you remember people you remember what happened we dealt with the lower
rungs within this bravel reel gorgeous so gorgeous and yesterday you watched the very high price
you watched their most valuable they pulled out the big card right they just pulled it out there
was what did they have you watched yesterday on danny jones iron danny jones you watched history
you watched the top bible scholar if not the top within the top well very low not you know very
slight number right tops in at least right i don’t know these things aren’t really ranked
But if you judge from the amount that Bart was able to bring in, yes, you watched a man fall.
You saw it in his eyes as Danny pulled out that lightsaber.
And the next thing Bart knew, he was in two pieces.
What is a professor of North Carolina Chapel Hill?
What is he supposed to do when everything he has taught has been shown to be wrong?
What can you do?
What is a Christ?
One simple question, people.
One voice of one muse.
Oh, God.
Oh, God.
The exaltation, the powers that rule the air.
Oh, God, I can feel it.
Oh, it’s gorgeous.
Gorgeousness and gorgiosity all together.
Here’s the moment, people.
Here’s the moment.
I want to take you there because I want this to be preserved historically.
I want it to be preserved historically.
I’m sorry I got so excited.
I want there to be a record of this, right?
in the future this record will be a celebrated piece of history and culture reality poetry
and religion and humanity this is the moment of the muse should we go ahead and bring up that
moment please and i want everybody i’m starting here right at the beginning because i don’t want
everybody to see at least this much i’ll do it people have been saying hey you’ve got to talk
about everything i mean you’ve got to talk about everything oh god i’m going to i’m going to but
this is for the people who want that moment are you ready right and this is what they run from
this is what all bible scholars run from remember as i’m about to play this i want you to understand
that Danny Jones tried to contact the head of Dallas Theological’s Greek program, right?
Just to be able to sit down and say, what’s a Christ?
And he wouldn’t come.
And the reason that Daryl Bach wouldn’t come is because he knew what Bart Ehrman didn’t, right?
Do you see why the Ronin is so superior as a fighter?
I’m not bound to any of your institutions
I’m bound only to the news
This is gorgeous
Let’s see that moment
Let’s see that moment
Chewie, this is a moment in history
Bring up the recording
And people, what are they looking at?
They’re looking at Christos
Which is the what?
It’s the word, oh God, it’s the Christ
And if you look in the definition
Which is what they are doing
you’ll see the sources right there now bart ehrman is about to discover what a christ is
and i want you to see i’m very carefully going to talk to you about this translation
because he mistranslates it even you know i appreciate the fact that it’s on the spot
but he mistranslates it okay after having boasted he was just reading euripides
look at how the muse puts that tiny bit of irony just boom just to highlight silhouette the hubris
right what platform did he bring he brought university of north carolina is what he brought
and he brought what oh it’s got to be closer sorry there we go we’ll work out these details
how’s that people how’s that can people hear me some say ho ho oh god all right people let’s try
that let’s try that okay so hit it chewy messiah um if you go euripides oh wow look at that
euripides is right there so click on euripides okay euripides oh there’s christos uh whether
ah oh no that’s a case phaedra yeah there it is phaedra yeah where it says uh whether uh it is the
uh the anointment or the uh yeah or the uh drug drink drug drink yeah whether anointment or drug
drink in other words the the uh the poisonous drink or the anointment so is it used as a drug
term here no can we give it credit for being here no because it’s it says i’d have to pause it then
fantastic did you hear danny drive it home he gave one more swipe with the lightsaber right
right and kudos first of all to steve for throwing him this right steve was sitting there with it
right oh you know he loved it right it you know it was coming it was like job of the hut man
what happened then that’s just it had it all set up right and that’s it princess strangled him
right fantastic so look what steve is doing he’s waiting in the wings i want you to recognize
he throws this to danny puts up the text and not only does danny give it to him watches that moment
of understanding but then when bart tries to collapse back danny gives it to him just drives
the saber home wasn’t that gorgeous so is this a drug term or not no wait you just said though in
the translation right which he mistranslated now i want people if if there was any way to bring this
So, there’s no way to, no, it’s okay.
Go ahead and just keep them up there.
We’ll cue them again in a second.
What I want you people to see about that specific line is that in the definition from the LSJ, Alice,
we have those references where the Christ is used.
How is this term used and where is it coming from?
The problem is, sorry, the Christ has those references in it.
So you can look up.
It’s sitting right there.
That’s what Steve and Danny did.
They brought up that text and saw, oh, look, there it is, right?
So, boom, we have the Euripides.
And the Euripides passage is talking about a drug that’s going to be used to overcome a kid to engage in sexual activity with them, okay?
That’s apparently, Bart hasn’t read this one, right?
The sentence itself is structured so beautifully in the Greek.
You need to see, you actually need to see it.
Chewy, we need to pull this up.
People, I know that.
Go to LSJ, Lexicon, Perseus Tufts, please.
Yeah, no, Lexicon, Perseus Tufts.
Perfect.
Now, type in, in English, it’s X-R-I-S-T-O-S.
Good, fantastic.
Now, click on it.
Now, share this with people, right?
Now, people, look at this.
We’re going to do this the right way.
This is where they are, just so you can see what’s going on.
so everybody is clear on what’s going on so that when bart denies that this is what’s happening
he’s had to first admit it’s what happening and then he has to say no that’s not what’s happening
right blow uh go ahead and hit it here chewy good no go back hit it here boom and go there now boom
now blow this up people here it is blow it up real big chewy so everybody can see everybody can see
Look at the references in blue, people.
What happened?
Maybe I picked the wrong one.
Chewy’s getting used to it.
Look at that.
For once, you’re getting used to the text.
That’s fantastic.
People, look at this.
I’m going to do this without even being able to see it, right?
Christos.
Look at the passages.
Look at the passages that it’s in.
See that A?
That’s Aeschylus.
Aeschylus what?
Prometheus bound, right?
What’s the next one?
E.
Euripides.
Hip.
H-I-P-P, Hippolytus. That’s the play about Phaedra, right? Fantastic. And then it gives
Theocritus, another one down here, the LXX. That’s the Septuagint. Oh, surprise, surprise,
surprise. Fantastic, people. Are you ready? Click on Hippolytus, please. Click on Hippolytus.
all right yeah click on hippolytus now go over here to the greek do they have the greek
oh those knuckleheads where’s the greek oh people now go up here go up here to the top right and
in this box put um euripides e-u-r good and now go down to the hippolytus boom and click on
Hippolytus, Greek.
Good.
Now, go to that line.
Oh, God.
Did anybody happen to see what line that was?
Throw me a bone here.
Go back and see what line it was.
Go back and see what line.
There you go.
Round 5, 10.
Look, people.
Now, how much, while Chewy’s getting this line, how much dogma or doctrine,
how much dogma or doctrine have I been giving to you?
None. Look what we’re doing. We’re working with text, people, with the language. We’re not working with ideas and theories. Good. That’s perfect. Ideas and theories. There’s no belief system here. There’s no eschatology or exegesis. Do you understand? I’m not trying to tell you interpret shit for you.
I have no, I don’t, people honestly, satanic congregation, you know this already.
I could give a rat’s backside about what you think.
And you should be the same about me, right?
You’re not here for my opinions.
Life is too short for a bunch of stupid opinions.
We need something substantial and reasoned.
We need something that we can trust in.
We need nature.
People, look at these lines.
Look at this.
Look at this, right?
This is Phaedra at the top.
She says,
What kind of drug is this?
Which of these two types of drugs is this drug?
Is it a Christ or is it a potable?
You absolutely cannot deny that the Christ is a drug.
this is why the head of dallas theological’s greek program would not come all right people
are used to this right my apologies but that’s what happens when you live in a dead zone you
know what i mean so um at this moment danny is realizing the sharpness of this sword and how
deep it can cut. People, I want you to remember I am not even there. I am not even there. Now that
line, if it’s at all possible, Chewy, to bring that back, I want you to keep looking at this line
because this line was mistranslated by faculty of classics at North Carolina Chapel Hill. If this is
the best you’ve got classics, I’m ashamed because I know every one of you who’s actually classically
trained i know that you can read this people look at the line people look at the line right
that’s which of the two and what you need to see is that there is a contrast here second
first of all that second word so to speak death is telling you the relationship of this sentence
to what has come before it right watch this architecture the first and the last word go
together yeah now what typically you learn in ancient greek is to not put the sentence together
until you’ve gotten through the whole thing you realize that’s what happens right and sometimes
it’s better to begin at the ending don’t worry it’s the superiority of ancient greek right look
at this one line how sophisticated this is right um so that first word and last word are going to
the drug and the interrogative of which of the two of these things, right?
Which of the two is this pharmacon? And potra is great because you can have a
thing in the plural or the singular and it’s performing the same function in the
accusative, right? So in the neuter, excuse me. So it’s a gorgiosity. Now look in
the middle. You have the Hriston, right? You have the Hriston and the Poton with an A between them.
What you’re contrasting in this sentence is those two things, right? So the language is telling you,
hey, we’re trying to make a contrast here between two things, right? And it’s connected to what’s
preceded it as an explanation following. And what we’re going to have is then, boom, which one is it?
what kind of drug is it is it a christ or is it a potable this line is defining a christ as
a drug now danny knows it he knows that’s what it’s doing right he knows the capacity of his
weapon and he just picked it up and used it iron danny jones iron okay hopefully we’re back
you have to look Euripides in the face and you have to say, no, no. Well, the problem is
not just Euripides. Danny has a whole bunch of weapons sitting right there. He’s got them in
Sophocles. He’s got them in Aeschylus. He’s got them in documents perfectly contemporary with
Jesus. Did you know that? Check out Diascorides. How many of these do we have? Well, thanks to
Iron Danny Jones, who first told me, he was like, hey, assemble all the sources. I was like, dude,
I’ve been doing this a long time. I should have thought of that, Danny. You know what I mean?
here’s the cool thing about it you don’t just pull up christ you pull up all the compounds the
antichrist the epichrist the in christ look there’s so many of them right by the time you assemble
all the christs you have a beautiful picture in the first century of exactly what a christ is
and it is not a messias. It is a pharmacon. Now, people, satanic congregation, it’s time for you.
It’s time for you to contribute. I’ve never taken a dime from you, right? Isn’t it funny that at the
beginning of this, Bart assumed that this was for book sales or something? Nope, right? And then he
assumed if it wasn’t, because then he said it wasn’t, he assumed it was for views. Nope, because I don’t
get paid for these views. I am not monetized. I do not have to be. Do you understand? I must maintain
my integrity. What you are watching is the brothel of MythVision dancing with the devil,
and it turns out the most expensive of their ladies of the evening was incapable of even
knowing what a christ is the brothel is all around you do you understand your greed has stained your
soul with a stench of ruin if you want the real it’s out there it’s out there yeah chewy what i
want to do is i want to start i want to just now that was my big presentation make me big just
for a second. That was my big presentation, okay? How long was that? Should we give me a time?
30 minutes minus a couple of minutes for bouncing too close to supernovae, right? Right? Right?
Fantastic. Recognize what has happened. Recognize what Danny Jones has done and why it is that
there is no Bible scholar, there is no monist who can stand before the muse. Now, this is the
extended version. For those of you who want to go about your work days, go ahead. But for those of
you who want, and I’ve seen a lot of people, and one of the things you have to do while you’re
while you’re watching Danny’s video is watch the comments. It’s very important. There’s two types
of commenters there’s those who comment before and they watch it and those who comment while or
after they watch it and it’s hilarious the early comment right is the oh god Bart Ehrman is the
world’s authority Bart Ehrman is the cat’s meow Bart Ehrman Bart Ehrman will do it if anybody
can do away with Amon Bart Ehrman can. Once they watch, they see, oh my god, this dude who says
hail Satan all the time. This dude just sent an arrow through Iron Danny Jones, and that arrow
penetrated the heart of monism. It doesn’t matter that Bart’s not a man of faith. They have no
defense we possess the texts oh it’s beautiful people why do you think why do you think let me
just let me take an aside just for one comment and should we pull up anything that’s related
to this that people want to talk about but i’m going to get to the video somebody told me in
ukraine the soviets when they controlled the place stifled classics why would you stifle classics
the tyrant-hating philosophy. Why would you do that? Put it together, people, right? Put it
together. Control via monism is the same, whether it’s through Atenism, Christianity, Judaism,
Islam, it doesn’t matter. Monism has one mechanism of control, and that is the fabrication of your
reality once you see through that fabrication the game’s over right the control is gone
danny jones just let everybody out yeah honor to you danny jones honor to steve too okay let’s hit
it chewy i want i want to play this thing for the people who are like i want you to comment on
everything right okay i’m gonna give you a little bit here we’ll do part one today right and if
people want more you can tell me you want more but let’s go ahead just play some and let’s comment
and sure you’ve got to mute me you’ve got to mute me when you play them oh and that’s the
pharmacist i don’t know i’d have to go seminary in new testament studies what’s up dr airman thanks
for coming man okay thanks for having me pleasure to meet you nice meeting you what’s your background
my background how long do you have at least three hours yeah okay well uh right so i’m a you know
I’m a scholar of the New Testament, early Christianity.
I have a PhD from Princeton Theological Seminary in New Testament studies.
My background, I got into biblical studies because I was a Christian as a teenager, a born-again evangelical Christian.
And I went off to a fundamentalist Bible college after high school and then went off to an evangelical liberal arts college.
And I got really interested in studying Greek.
the ancient language greek is an ancient language and um decided to do graduate work uh analyzing
greek manuscripts of the new testament and so i went to princeton theological seminary where the
world’s expert in the analysis of greek manuscripts uh worked and i spent uh years there working on
that and did a master’s degree and a phd um end up teaching at rutgers university for a few years
And I’ve been at North Carolina Chapel Hill now for, well, since 1988.
Oh, wow.
Teaching.
Now, let it keep me small.
No, go ahead and keep it small.
Let it be known that Bart Ehrman’s background and Amon Hillman’s background are very similar.
Because I, too, came out of the Baptist church, working in missions, teaching Sunday school, wanting to learn great for one reason, to read the Bible, of course.
In that way, Bart and I are exactly the same. The difference is, Bart’s path was guided through theology at seminary, where his degrees are from. My path was guided through classics straight up.
all right you see berkeley university of arizona university of wisconsin madison okay all right you
see the divergence fantastic go uh both undergraduate students and phd students in
early christianity new testament those kinds of things and you mentioned that when you were
younger you had a belief and you were you were a practicing christian that’s right and what
happened to you is what was your evolution through your belief in christianity well when i i was
raised in the church. I was raised in the Episcopal Church. But then when I was a teenager,
late teenager, mid-teenager, I had a born-again experience and became a very conservative
evangelical. And a lot of my faith at that point was built on the idea that the Bible has no
mistakes in it, completely inerrant. That was the view taught at the Moody Bible Institute I went to
and also at Wheaton College, where I finished my undergraduate degree. That view started
shifting when i went into graduate school yeah exactly ditto right ditto except baptist evangelical
right as i started i learned hebrew and so i was reading the new testament in greek and the old
testament in hebrew and i learned french and german so i could read what modern scholars
are saying in these countries and learned other ancient languages and the more i studied the more
i realized in fact the bible does have mistakes in it uh their contradictions their discrepancies
their geographical errors, their problems with the Bible. For a number of years, I became more of a
mainline Protestant type who had a fairly liberal view of the Bible, a pretty liberal view of social
issues and politics and things, but I’ve still identified with the church. I ended up leaving
Christianity maybe about 30 years ago or so, and it wasn’t directly related to my scholarship.
it was uh trying to wrestle with the problem of why they’re suffering in the world
uh why why there’s so much pain and misery if there’s a god who’s in control and so i’d spent
you know i okay okay right fantastic so i want you to notice the things that he’s talking about
like with the french and the german right classes just have to be the same thing because you have to
be able to digest articles and classics that are in french and german why because you know it’s
Different times, the Germans were dominating in the early 1900s.
Classical philology was all German-dominated, so there’s a lot of good German articles.
Right? Oh, God, the A&RW and everything.
Oh, God, these lengthy German publications that just make you, you know, very complete.
You know, when you’re done with that exam, they went somewhere, you know what I mean?
So all of this he’s describing is an academic pathway.
but again i want you to notice he is within theology within seminary princeton theological
seminary right princeton remember what happened to princeton’s classics department right they shot
themselves in the foot they didn’t want to teach greek anymore because it was too hard so they’re
just going to let their students read everything in english you know what those numb nuts will be
worth zero right go ahead i i actually taught on it i’ve written a book on it i i read a lot of
philosophers and theologians and biblical scholars and what regular people say about why they’re
suffering and i just got to a point where i didn’t believe it anymore that there there’s actually
some kind of divine being who’s in charge of the world um what is the in your view the difference
between biblical scholars and classical scholars um they’re very closely related and it depends
which kind of biblical scholar you’re talking to most biblical scholars work in a theological
context in divinity schools and seminaries and they would be uh they would be more closely
related to theologians than they’d be related to classicists um my training was mainly in that kind
of world uh where i the theological world because my my uh even my master’s degree and my phd were
princeton theological seminary which trains presbyterian ministers but they were also very
interested in serious scholarship and so it kind of was more uh kind of crossing the lines my my
professor my main professor bruce metzger uh was actually his graduate degrees were in uh classics
and uh so i had a bit of that but once i started teaching uh i really shifted more uh kind of away
from anything having to do theology and and you know interpreting the bible for the church kind
of thing and far more into kind of the classics and so i have a secondary appointment at unc
chapel hill in the classics so um there’s one thing it’s one thing to be a marine
it’s another thing to know a marine do you understand this is training and what you saw
in danny jones was the benefit of my training do you understand that i was able to hand that
weapon to him and danny was able to use it and beautifully iron beautifully by the way
satanic congregation let teddy know how sexy he is please give me the next go ahead department and
um those are the people i really resonate with or the classicists and in your opinion what which
one of the ancient languages is the best ancient language the best yeah for what for anything
brownie recipes yeah so okay um i want you to notice the tone there is a within classics there
is a an understanding of the sacred nature of greek the sacred nature if not just the sacred
nature of philology in general go ahead well they’re very different okay can you explain
like the different what’s the difference between like ancient hebrew and ancient greek well they’re
unrelated and so greek is an indo-european language right like english um and uh and so the
grammar of greek can be taught if somebody knows english grammar which nobody does anymore but if
they did know english grammar the england the grammar of the greek makes sense in many ways
it doesn’t in many other ways because it’s an ancient language hebrew is a semitic language
and so it’s different in every way it has a different alphabet instead of going from left
to right it goes from right to left it doesn’t have the same ways of doing grammar uh and so
uh and there aren’t as many texts in ancient hebrew as there are in ancient greek for greek
we have thousands and thousands of texts i mean going back to homer and right he see it and on up
and it just goes forever for for the bible for the for the hebrew hebrew like biblical hebrew
the bible is the only hebrew bible the only sources from its time period that we have right
and so it’s in some ways it’s harder to analyze hebrew texts when it comes to things like just
words like if there’s a word that occurs one time in the hebrew bible well that’s the only time the
word occurs anywhere that time period and so how do you know what it means right exactly and so
there are places where you can’t really even tell you know it’s some kind of probably a four-legged
animal of some kind but you don’t know what and so with greek it’s not that way because
all i mean there are greek words that we aren’t really quite sure what they mean
even in the new testament um but most there are greek words that we don’t know what they mean
what is he saying right because he’s not a classicist and he doesn’t read a lot of
text he doesn’t realize the superiority of ancient greek is that the individual
speaker or writer of ancient greek is able to create their own vocabulary we have so many
individual words of individual speakers some people some people are doing it more than others
let me give you a great example that i haven’t given you yet galen is creating physiology and
anatomy. Imagine that these are not sciences, and you have to create the science. You can’t do that
without Greek, right? You can’t do that in Latin. The Latin physicians don’t do this. The Medici,
no way, right? Galen is estimated to be 10%. I heard somebody estimated at 10% of all Greek
literature is Galen, okay? If you’ve read half of Galen, you’ve read five percent of ancient Greek
literature, and I am telling you, Galen, who is pushing this second sophistic rejuvenation
of the Koine into its Attic precursor, he’s spearheading it as an intellectual, he’s spearheading
it. He’s not doing it on purpose. He didn’t sit down and say, oh, I think I’ll make this language
what it used to be at its height. No, he’s not doing that. Some grammarians are, don’t get me
wrong. Galen is not. He is just creating a science. And the Greek, mother Greek, sexy mother Greek,
has given him the ability to do so, to create new vocabulary that other docs can read and say,
boom and advance from there some doctors do this more than others galen does it rapidly
and ferociously and almost like the dude is oh god did he get in a machine and come back in time
or something right it was the greek language that allowed that and that’s why you only have
seven thousand words in ancient hebrew that survive okay okay now wait a minute i want you
to think for a minute one of bart’s comments it’s coming up is well you know you can’t take he knows
who i am he doesn’t want to admit it but he knows who i am right he who shall not be named i guess
is what i have to be right he knows that and he’s already gone into this and his argument as well
What’s the words, right?
If they only happen to capture 7,000 words, that would be fine.
If all that was left of Hebrew was a pamphlet or maybe, you know, a very short story, right?
But we supposedly, if the Bible is Hebrew, that’s thousands of pages, brother.
If we only have 7,000 words and thousands of pages, we have a problem.
And I know that’s a fact, because in history, in antiquity, Julius Africanus pointed out how crappy the vocabulary was in Hebrew.
Do you understand? It’s not my point. It’s his point.
What? Oh, people, let Chewy know if the mic’s okay, by the way.
I hope people can hear. Can people hear if they’re…
We’re using a new… Look, we’re using…
Maybe I’ll just put it down here on my manly chest.
the people you let me know let me know baby if you can’t hear me you know all right
that’s inappropriate talk where’s timmy oh god you can’t you know in the fountain i can’t really do
anything timmy i think it’s all right it’s the wrong month anyway i gotta wait another month
all right give it to me where’s the keep going let’s keep going most of the time the words every
the words are used so many times in so many pieces of greek literature that you can analyze how
they’re being used in the context and you can use the context in order to establish the basic
meaning of the word and how to use variously and so that’s that’s a luxury that you get with greek
and you also get that with latin right but you don’t get it so much with hebrew or coptic which
is another language that people might field study or syriac but greek and latin which is what the
classicists do we’re really we’re really well set with those in comparison yeah this is a bit been a
highly contested topic on this on this podcast recently when it comes to exactly what you were
just talking about with greek being everywhere in antiquity and there being no hebrew hebrew
outside of like the dead sea scrolls like all the ancient texts were um all the ancient hebrew texts
were religious texts however greek you you have legal shit you have uh medical stuff you have
all kinds of all kinds of stuff in greek poetry comedy everything but then you have like the
dead sea scrolls come about and we just have the dead sea scroll religious texts right and there’s
no other hebrew you can find there’s no libraries with any hebrew in them or anything like that so
that’s basically true but it’s not completely true okay there are inscriptions for example
in greek so inscription would be you know things written out on stone that are not religious
Please stop. Oh, God, that’s basically true. That beautiful thing that Danny said, right? That was great. I love that, right? Who wouldn’t? Perfect. Perfect logical. This is the reason discussion we’re having, right? The answer is basically, that’s the best basically.
me but we have some letters really do we really right somebody wrote to me the other day and said
oh you got you don’t know what you’re talking about first of all katie and blah blah blah and
the library of asher bonnie paul and blah blah hoo ha i have seen the library of asher bonnie paul
with its chicken scratch and i am not impressed by your lists i am not impressed by that thing
you call Gilgamesh? That, your best piece, is a third-grade rendition of a crap-hole wizard of
Oz. Are you kidding me? Jesus, man, when did you forego your reason? The reason that people don’t
see the real beauty of Mother Greek is because they are blinded by the bog-trotting bullshit
anglo-saxon crappery that is stuffing their ears through sources of theology. Do you understand?
We’re talking about a craft here called classics. This is a skill. It is not a theology. It is not a
and it is not a, you know, religion. It is a science. Oh, God. And if you don’t appreciate
mother great well that’s that’s too bad go give it to him chewy’s gonna open up the hole and throw
throw this home go for it give me let him speak please in hebrew yes okay and some of the
some of the um there have been other discoveries of texts that are in hebrew from there aren’t
very many of them but like they’ll find a cache of letters for example written in hebrew and so
there are some things but not for the hebrew bible period itself the dead sea scrolls are much
later than the i mean the the hebrew bible period dates basically from it’s it’s debated when the
first text were written 10th century maybe bce up to maybe the second century bce but the dead sea
scrolls are more around the time of jesus and so there it’s a different period okay one okay one
would think let me just make it clear so you don’t get back alleyed here one would think that he just
said we have hebrew text from the 10th century we don’t we don’t they just look these just look
at the bible and they say oh isaiah’s got to be way back so this has to come from them we have
no text from them there is no history there is no literature there is nothing in hebrew anytime
anywhere and the greek that is around it doesn’t reflect it at all there’s nothing there it doesn’t
exist. We have tags from the 10th century. No, you don’t. You have a Hellenistic Septuagint
that was later copied into Hebrew, a very primitive, destroyed language that hadn’t
been spoken for years, centuries, excuse me, hadn’t been spoken for centuries, just like Umbrian.
This shady dude is walking by. Is this shady or is it shady? Is it loud enough, people? I’m just
trying to get you to say is it loud enough oh god let’s see what happens that was sauce right there
give it in uh give go ahead let him talk right and um so the the scholarly consensus and this
is another thing i don’t understand that i’ve heard so much from bible scholars is they always
say most scholars would agree why is consensus so important when it comes to this stuff why why
doesn’t it like for me i just maybe i don’t understand this because i didn’t come from a
university or anything yeah yeah well it’s not important as evidence so that’s the first thing
to say and no no no really good scholar ever uses it as evidence in other words the fact that
everybody says so doesn’t make it so right right so i guess the reason you reason people say that
we’ll see do people see the hypocrisy here the fact that everybody says it’s that way doesn’t
make it that way that’s not good academic argumentation and he’s right so when everybody
says oh almond’s got to be wrong because everybody says he’s wrong what do you think that means it
means he cannot see his own hypocrisy dr urban i’m showing you the mirror i should love it it’s
pocket baby you owe me go and i say it as well is because if you have a counter opinion then it
needs to be examined and you need to look at it but you need to realize that there’s a reason that
everybody thinks the other right and and these are you know when it comes to biblical scholarship
for example you know biblical scholarship’s been around for 300 years and lots and lots and lots of
things get changed have been changed do get changed but if somebody says that virtually all
scholars agree that the gospel that whoever wrote matthew was using the gospel of mark and you say
like virtually everybody agrees with that you say virtually because there will be some exceptions
but the reason the reason that you say that is because these are most of these people are ones
who have actually looked at it seriously and thought about it really hard and seen all of
the evidence and on the basis of all this evidence they say you know it’s probably this and so it’s
like you know it’s like that in every field yeah to me it just feels like a cop-out like it’s like
oh gorgeous standing cop-out it is a cop-out biblical scholarship has been around for 300 years
Bart, Bart, how long has classical scholarship been around? Did you know there was classical
scholarship before there was any other scholarship? Did you know the original scholarship was classical
scholarship? Did you know we’re going back to the museum? Classical scholarship isn’t 300 years old,
all right? Classical scholarship goes back to the Hellenistic Greeks of the museum, those
grammarians who began to standardize greek education go out if you’re using it as an
argument yes exactly correct but nobody uses it people people object when someone says that they
say well that’s not an argument but no one’s using it they shouldn’t be using it as an argument if
they are using it now the hypocrisy here is that bart is talking about nobody using it as an
argument. And the people that he works with to sell product to you, those people use this argument
all the time. It’s all they use. It’s all they can use to come up with their little ideas, like
the words dunce across his hat. Dunce, look, he’s got a dunce cap on. Right? Do you see how it’s not
just simple ignorance people it is intentional obfuscation and misdirection in order to loot
you dishonest myth visionally dishonest this is their top guy this is the top lady of the
evening and the bravo people give it to me it’s an argument that’s stupid yes i mean you know
uh so the you know the fact that everybody agrees the world is round doesn’t mean it’s round
exactly but but you know if you don’t think it’s round you really have a burden of proof
so by saying it’s a consensus you just say yeah okay if you think otherwise let me see
you know let me see your stuff right so um one of the folks i had on here recently believes that the
septuagint it was originally written in greek and that it was translated into hebrew and the reason
he said that is because and i’ll i’ll try to elucidate this argument the best i possibly can
and you can basically deconstruct it and give me the what you think um is that ancient greek is a
language that had over a million unique words ancient hebrew is a language that had maybe
7 000 at best unique words and he he made the argument that you cannot translate from something
less technical hebrew to something way more technical ancient greek he says you translate
down you don’t translate up right so you don’t you don’t like if i was to the the analogy i think of
that i try to uh explain when i talk about this is like you find a flying saucer in the desert and
you want to like reverse engineer it and make your own flying saucer when you try to reverse engineer
that flying saucer you’re not going to make something better than that flying so it’s going
to be something not as good right so so that was his main argument with the translation of the
septuagint meaning like that’s why he thought it was an original greek and then it was translated
into hebrew after but the argument of this is that the greek that we read the new testament
or the old testament is like koine greek it’s like a it’s like a very unsophisticated greek
compared to like homer and some of the ancient stuff yeah well it’s not a very good argument
i don’t know who i don’t know who this is but i mean it’s a it’s a very bad argument you frequently
have translations go both ways translated up translated down it’s just an empirical fact
um english is a much more complicated language than many works that are translated into english
and the bible gets translated into many languages that are much more simple than greek
so it goes both ways and it always goes both ways moreover how does he know there are 7 000
unique words in hebrew he’s basing that on the fact that we’ve got these texts that have 7 000
unique words okay these are the only texts we have people spoke hebrew we have no idea what
their vocabulary was for him to say that it had to be only these 7 000 words it’s a little bit crazy
that’s like saying if you get a copy of time magazine or something or what may it’s not
imprinted anymore but you get time magazine and you say this is the extent of the english
vocabulary like in 3 000 years somebody finds somebody finds a time magazine and they re and
they categorize all the words say okay those are the only words in english and so it could not
have been translated into a language that has more words because it doesn’t work that way
sure but just going off evidence right we have what is evidence sorry all right fantastic now
let me tell you what’s actually going on julius africanus is sitting around with origin and
they’re talking about what these texts are doing right and how they’re getting the hebrew and
And Africanus is like, man, they don’t even have basic words in Hebrew, right?
How are they dialoguing?
How are the Jewish sources and the Greek sources dialoguing in Greek?
They don’t dialogue in Hebrew because they don’t have enough words.
Who said that for this bad argument I’ve got?
Who said that there are 7,000 words in ancient Hebrew?
You know who said that?
the head of Hebrew, the head of their Hebrew language program. I forget if he’s at Tel Aviv or
Hebrew University, but he gave an interview to CNN and he said, ancient Hebrews only got about
7,000 words. It’s only got about a 7,000 word capacity, right? Just like Umbrian or Oskan.
It’s no different people. It’s not special, right? Languages are like this and they get swallowed up.
Have you read any Askin lately? Well, why not? It was this nice language. No, it wasn’t. It was a primitive language that had shit for vocab, right? Now you’re dealing with this Greek language that can fabricate words, can create. It’s plastic. It allows its user to create vocabulary. Do you understand? Okay, that’s the difference with the Greek.
And what he’s telling you, oh, they spoke Hebrew.
And why don’t they have libraries?
And why don’t we have any of this Hebrew that you’re talking about?
We do have thousands of pages of 7,000 words.
And Julius Africanus said, dude, they don’t know basic stuff, right?
He said, I asked them, what’s the word for this plant?
You know, this tree.
Oh, what is it?
They don’t have it.
don’t have basic words like that because the rabbis that were handling this at the time the
religious experts right they’re they’ve been speaking greeks for years they don’t speak hebrew
they’ve been speaking greek hebrew reached its capacity blindsided was blindsided right just
like oscar and number and ask any classicist why don’t we have any more umbrian right and it’s one
class is one where one place would be like yeah the history of the earth people is the history
of language welcome to the party bart give me the next one what’s his evidence i’m saying just going
off evidence of word counts unique word counts for those languages today we only have 7 000 unique
words for ancient greek we have over a million i mean i’m sorry we only have 7 000 for ancient
hebrew we have a million for ages right maybe those are today those are estimates right those
are samples maybe they are no they’re not estimates he’s basing this on account what the
hebrew words we have but when people translated the hebrew into the greek they didn’t have just
those seven thousand words this was this was this was two thousand do you realize he’s contradicting
now our sources we have a sources working the opposite direction of the picture that he’s
trying to paint you right right they weren’t walking around with hebrew text they were trying
to come up with them by translating the greek this is all very very simple dick and jane went up the
hill to fetch a pail of water all right okay now if i translate that into another language i better
have you know i’ll have dick and jane to look for him because their names right but the verb ran and
the hill you know if i put in scarpment or if i put a the place of the cosmic focus of the hill
god into that hill you would think what the hell are you doing is your translator on drugs just
use hill you do not move in translation from a simple to shady ass okay if this guy does
is yeah i’m leaving okay shady ass did you see that that’s like the sixth time yeah
anywho um you know it comes with the territory love it here we go are you ready give me a couple
more minutes i think years ago okay but do you think that there do you do you think the scale
was similar though do you think so right now it doesn’t matter how similar it is because
it’s not always that you take something more complicated and make it more simple
or that you take something more simple and make it more complicated you can absolutely just show
time after time after time where that is and how it happens there are also very good reasons for
thinking it did not go from greek to hebrew okay what would be a good example of something that
went from the of a translation that went from some language that was less complicated to something
far more complex um that went from something less complicated to more complex for example hebrew to
greek coptic people it’s been due to the success of lady babylon um and the success of finally
bringing this information to people close your door to letting people get it i’m getting
threats and a lot of you know people are concerned offering me safety and stuff and um i’m gonna stop
today and you know i don’t uh um i’ll continue another time have a nice day take a look at what
is going on with iron danny jones and honor honor the muse hail satan
