The episode opens on a clip of a well-known Christian apologist celebrating that teenagers are walking into bookstores asking for Bibles, and that Joe Rogan and others are showing fresh interest in the faith. For Ammon Hillman, this is the monist virus doing exactly what it always does in a time of social chaos. The response is built around one claim: the people promoting the Bible cannot read the Greek it was written in, and the word they are spreading, Christ, has a meaning they will not state on camera.
The Greek passages are laid out one by one. In the New Testament, the scandal Jesus warns against is eating eidōlothyta (εἰδωλόθυτα), things offered to idols, breathing in thumiamata (θυμιάματα), and the act he calls porneia (πορνεία). The show reads Matthew’s warning about an eye that scandalizes as advice about drugs rather than a metaphor, and points to Isaiah 28:7, where the priest and the prophet stagger from methē (μέθη), strong drink, until what they see is called a phasma (φάσμα), a hallucination. Epithymia (ἐπιθυμία), the desire that comes from a look, is placed in the same pattern.
The close ties the word back to medicine. A physician contemporary with Jesus named Aelius Promotus wrote about the ephemeron (ἐφήμερον), the meadow saffron whose modern name the show gives as colchicine, and linked the drug to Medea, called Colchis, the first figure it says Christed anyone. Dioscorides, writing in the same years, is quoted naming the theriac as the purple and describing drugs being perichristed. On this basis the title becomes a warning in reverse: the Christ of the gospels was, in this reading, an anointing with mind-and-mood-altering substances, and what the missionaries are really recruiting is the young.
