Video Description
This episode is a workshop session rather than a lecture, a line-by-line look at the Greek Magical Papyri and a text usually called the Mithras Liturgy, which Ammon Hillman treats as an actual performance script for a mystery. The opening line is an address to Pronoia (Πρόνοια), the providence who walks beside you and writes your story, and to Psyche (Ψυχή), the soul. The claim is that this is a map for something the ancients meant to be carried out, not read: the text has a chorus, music, and the earliest written form of music in the record.
The center of the rite is the number seven. The performer is told to greet the Lord, Helios Mithras (Ἥλιος Μίθρας), named as the dawn-bringer, and the seven vowels of Greek, alpha, epsilon, eta, iota, omicron, upsilon, and omega, are read as the seven wandering stars, the notes of the strings. At line 666 the text names seven holy virgins, parthenoi (παρθένοι), dressed in purple-dyed linen and described as having faces of asps, who guard the four pillars. The show reads these as the echidna (ἔχιδνα), the viper priestess, a woman raised inside the rite from before puberty, which is how the ancient language of vipers is explained.
The last movement lands on the Christing itself. The instructions say to speak in a low voice over the initiate’s head and to Christ his vision, his opsis (ὄψις), with the mystery, the musterion (μυστήριον), which the episode equates with the pharmakon (φάρμακον), the drug. The rite is described as requiring sexual stimulants and a state of climax, and the text offers to link two people in ekstasis (ἔκστασις) so they share the same vision. The point pressed to the end is that what modern believers call a name was, in these pages, a procedure of dawn, drug, and song.
