This episode sets the Greek creation story beside the opening of the Bible. Ammon Hillman reads the chorus of Aristophanes’ Birds as the old genesis it says the Septuagint was later shaped from: humans are called molded figures, plasmata (πλάσματα), shadow-dwellers, skioeideis (σκιοειδεῖς), and day-creatures, ephēmeroi (ἐφήμεροι), phantoms rather than solid things. The birds answer by offering to explain the genesis of the gods, and the first things named are Chaos (Χάος), black-winged Night, Nyx (Νύξ), dark Erebos (Ἔρεβος), and wide Tartarus (Τάρταρος), all present before earth, air, or sky.
From there Night, the black-winged one, lays a wind egg in the boundless folds of her kolpos (κόλπος), and from it comes Eros (Ἔρως), the desirable one with golden wings. Eros then mingles with winged Chaos through wide Tartarus and brings the race of birds into the light. The show leans on the parallel in Genesis: the earth is called unseen, aoratos (ἀόρατος), and unformed, akataskeuastos (ἀκατασκεύαστος), and the breath of God is pneuma theou (πνεῦμα θεοῦ). The claim pressed from these words is that the Greek is too precise to be a translation, and that the Hebrew behind it, a few thousand words, could never hold the vocabulary.
The ending doubles back to the mirror image of the tyrant and the sacrifice of children. The episode says monism attacks the children as its way of overthrowing the mother origin, and it points to the Eleusinian mysteries, where the one vision the initiates see is the resurrected queen. For the series, the wind egg and the golden-winged Eros make the point that every human arrives through desire, through the same gate, and that Eros is the god who was there at the beginning.
