Video Description

The thirteenth lesson is a review and then a full exam, and Ammon Hillman keeps returning to one idea: Greek translation is arithmetic, not inspiration. The conditions are sorted into formulas, the past general with its did and would, the future more vivid with its if this happens then that will, the past contrafactual with its had and would have, and the future less vivid with its should and would. Every sentence is reduced to identifying the structure before a single word is turned into English.

Madalena works through long passages, including an example where a participle stands in for an entire if clause. The lesson also revisits the hortatory subjunctive, the let us, in a future more vivid sentence about leading into the city whoever is judged worthy of the name of wisdom because they guard the freedom of all. The dative of respect shows a person good in body but bad in soul, and the dative of agent appears with passive verbs, all practiced so the cases become automatic.

The exam readings feature Socrates and Demosthenes. One passage says the death of Socrates was announced by the priests performing the sacrifice, and another says Socrates was not honored by the wealthy because the citizens were not educated about the truth by the wise, while Demosthenes, the orator, was treated poorly even though he wished to save the democracy. The closing note of an 87 to 90 score is treated as a pass, and the homework for the next unit is built around repeating the exercises until the formulas no longer need to be looked up.

Oh, Madelaine, are you there? All right, fantastic. I’m sorry to take so long.
Oh, you’re all good.
Okay, good. Fantastic. How do you feel?
All right, thank you.
Your audio is a little bit messed up, so I’m sure it’ll come in.
Can you hear me?
Oh, there we go. Yeah, how are you?
Oh, I’m doing all right.
Fantastic. Are you flooded? Are you concerned? How do you, just tell me how you feel.
are you man i’m a little i’m meh yeah i’m a little overwhelmed with all these things all
these endings and uh yeah okay okay good still overwhelmed that’s good that’s pretty normal you
should be right you wouldn’t be normal you wouldn’t be human if you weren’t um tell me something i’m
gonna give you an option you can we can either do what i said yesterday and just go through some
review and casually discuss and firm things up or you can jump right into the exam if you want to
it’s up to you i’m going to let you call that um well can we do some exercises and then go into the
exam yes let’s do that where do you want to start we can do the review translate on i think these
are on yeah 290 okay 291 do you want to try those or do you want to do some unit exercises
what would you like to do um yeah 290 would be good okay all right uh you want to start
with number one sure okay go ahead and read it let’s translate it together
All right.
All right, good, good.
Why don’t you tell me what you can make of it so far?
You know, just kind of talk through it.
So, to be wrong or to do wrong.
Um, and then there’s pointy, which is do, doing, do something, which is shameful. This, anyway, um, teluthon eluthane, or ethylene, sorry, teluthon ethylene,
which is wish to wish and to uh to die or the conclusion um they and so in the very beginning
is the heyday heyday this city oh there is man and this is toy gay socrates and at least socrates
yeah so let me jump in and help a little bit no because you’re you’re bringing it all together
you’re bringing the host is the is that so that yeah so you got a what you got a result clause
there oh yeah yeah right so yeah just look at the do what you’re doing look at the grammar
so yeah the host plus where’s the verb with the host
um that’s it hang on before we get it with that that’s a bit i’m talking about the host
stay there. So yeah, this is your result
clause. You’ve got a result clause here with
hostage, and it’s going to
have a verb with it. It’s got to either
be teloton or ethylene.
Try ethylene.
Yeah, as
its verb, it’s a natural
result, right?
Wish. Oh, it’s
an infinitive.
To wish.
So as to want
or to wish, yeah.
so as to wish to die to tell our time to complete yeah to complete okay yeah
yeah or die right yeah that and we’ve got an accusative a subject accusative of this
infinitive right the tautane is the first in that hoste clause that’s a complex clause
that hoste clause so that right something was happening to such a degree
to such a degree was the city maltreated by socrates who was doing shameful things
That, it, the city, Tautain, that’s why it’s feminine, so that it, right, the city, Ethelain, wanted, right, what did it want?
It wanted that Ekinon Tonantre, that this guy, Telautan, finish.
It wanted this guy to die.
Yeah, you see that?
Yeah, so just look it over again, knowing that that’s the structure.
look it over again and say okay so this city oh man right so mistreated by this guy socrates
who’s doing ice crap doing terrible things dirty things right so we don’t even want to talk about
in public so that it the city wanted him to die good good and what do they tell you yeah date of
personal agent, right? Okay, good. Attributive participle. Okay. And clause of natural result,
subject, acute. Okay, fine. They’re just reviewing for you. How about what else would you like to do?
Number two looks okay. You want to try that one?
Yeah, we can do that.
Okay.
Actually, look at three. Three’s a little shorty. Do a little shorty for a break.
all right look at the parentheses underneath it this is the circumstance
past general conditional sense okay which one was the past general again that was what
what was the protesis and hypothesis do you remember was it like was it did
dead it’s a dead dead right yeah right yeah okay so for you and this is to do so that would be
um um did did not did not do good um uh not one not to not want when wait
any time, some time
you can just put some time there
some time, okay, I didn’t know because it didn’t have an accent
on it
right, it’s the one that doesn’t
so it’s got the
it’s just some time
when there’s a
let me just stop you there, there’s a word
in Greek, tis
tau, iota, sigma
tis
and if it’s got an accent, it’s a question
who, if it’s just
doesn’t have an accent it’s just t by itself it just means somebody so pote is just like
sometime it lacks the accent sometimes so yeah
I would probably be to have honored yourself yeah keep it a past general that’s okay keep
past general is it did oh to don’t uh uh it did honor when when you honored yourself yeah so how
about if they did not do good there’s your protest if they did not do good they did not want
oh to honor no it’s passive yeah uh to be honored to be honored you got it oh yeah you got it to be
honored good good so if they did not do good they did not want to be honored yeah now the thing is
oh shite let me check sign oh hang on a second i have a really sensitive smoke alarm now
get treated properly it won’t smoke oh god it’s a functional kitchen i’m sorry for the loud fan
noise okay so good so it’s a did did now what would you expect i’m gonna try to should we turn
it off okay she can okay um what what do we expect in a past general we expected the a plus
optative followed by an imperfect so we got an imperfect here a salon right yeah and if you
think about it you would translate that anyway by itself they did not want they did not want from
ethelo good and um so the may point test there is just a participle serving as that a plus the
optative so you can translate the same way if they did not want may point us if they did not want
or do i’m sorry if they did not do good okay i’m going to turn it off that’s too annoying
okay if they didn’t want to do good then um what was it uh they didn’t want to be honored
yeah good good now look at number two and look at the parentheses first before you even look
at the greek this is a future more vivid future more vivid does will do okay
future more vivid does will do so you already know where you’re going to be translating the tenses
no problem does will do but it says there’s a hortatory subjunctive in the hypothesis
so it’s the then clause that has a hortatory then let us right if something happens let us
right right let us do something so you can see how that’s kind of a future to say let us is
kind of a future thing because it’s not happening now right so you can see why this there’s a
okay hortatory subjunctives may actually work here in a future more vivid good um and then they say
there’s a circumstantial participle showing cause introduced by hate so we’re going to have a because
of something yeah okay now reading greek now read it in greek and as you read it
I want you to be not paying attention to me at all. I don’t give a shit
I’m not gonna be correcting pronunciation as you’re reading it out loud to yourself and as you’re hearing it
I want you to be thinking about its structure. All right, who’s on to on the models?
to so fu
Axios a
Gargamel day to turn boat is
tain police pulling hot a tain pantone a listeria pullax on the blocks okay um there’s my heart
Hoss is
Whomever
Yes
Whomever
Whomever
I’m sorry
It’s a hoss so whoever
It’s a subject right
Hoss
The name
The name
Anyway
C-O-C
Which
is to
think of
as worthy
or to be worthy.
I see
you say to
Okay.
You’re right there. You’ve got it.
You’re right.
Yeah, no, you’re right.
It’s a does
will do. So this is the does part.
So Hoss,
whoever
Yeah. Whoever is oxyothay. Whoever. And that’s an aorist. I want you to notice that oxyothay is an aorist. What is that thing?
So is it subjunctive? Maybe. An aorist. Passive. Aorist. Passive. Subjunctive.
all right so may think of as worthy yeah whoever yeah make it passive whoever is thought worthy
okay is thought worthy right so worthy of what worthy of what oxy or takes the genitive worthy
of something worthy to onomatopoeia of the name of the wise yeah exactly worthy of
being called wise the name of yeah yeah or you could you could say um a wise
name too whoever’s worthy of a wise name right yeah
oh man um i’ll go uh to lead right uh yeah from ago do you remember the yeah do you remember the
principal parts of ago they’re really weird ago oxo and that third was a gagon with an eight on
the front but that but that ada is an epsilon augmented alpha so here’s the here’s it without
its augment because it’s subjunctive right look at that omen look at that omen that’s subjunctive
with that omega in there it’s there right okay is it um so that would be the hortatory subjunctive
so it’d be like yes let us lead good um tuton maybe oh uh tuton this please yeah this person
let us lead this person person um ace in poland where are we gonna lead him
into the city yeah and why are we gonna do that hot day uh every everyone or at all all of
everybody yeah because what because what is it yeah go all because of the guarded freedom
or uh almost almost notice it says in the parentheses it says you’ve got a circumstantial
participle showing cause introduced by hate so the hate is because and the phylloxant is in the
accusative case because he guarded because he guarded it’s referring back to the two-tone
right that participle for locks on ta is like an adjective that’s harkening back to the two-tone
because he guards the eleutherian the freedom
yeah of everyone yeah because he guards the freedom of everyone right yeah yeah whoever’s
thought worthy of the name of wisdom let us lead this one into the city let’s bring him into the
city because he’s a guardian of the just of the freedom of all okay um what’s most important is
that you’re seeing what’s going on in the parentheses let’s do it this time number four
and look at look at what it says in the parentheses future more vivid what are we
to expect with a future more vivid aeon plus yeah plus a subjunctive um and then uh future right
good so we already know what to expect what else what else just so we know just so we know what to
expect look they say there’s going to be a double accusative with poin so there’s going to be two
objects you do something something so okay fine there’s an infinitive with passive of killelwo
right to be to order to do something right so to be ordered to do something and forget about the
dysolabic and clinic that doesn’t matter okay okay go uh to read it and as you’re reading it again
Think about the conditional. Go.
Okay.
That means, a couple of us, or a party that demands democracy.
Okay, let’s see, Fianhoide.
Hoide means less, and if…
Anyway, the ice cream, tastes…
So, Kaleo Sose.
so that would be um yeah what is that that’s it oh come on you can do this you can identify it
you can identify it um well because it’s future more vivid i’m gonna assume that it’s uh a future
future but still kind of lucy some kind of what are you expecting some kind of future yeah um
And so, like, imperfect, right?
No, hang on a second.
Yeah, the future that’s going to come is going to come later.
But for kaleosthosy, that’s an aon plus a subjunctive.
Now, what kind of subjunctive is it?
Is it a present subjunctive?
Is it an aorist subjunctive?
Which one of those?
An aorist.
Good.
It’s an aorist.
The principal parts of kaleo are tough.
Kaleo, Kaleuso, right?
And Kaleusa.
Kaleusa, yeah.
Yeah.
Let’s go to the back of your book.
First one there is the winner.
Oh, shit.
You’re going to beat me.
You’re going to beat me.
Yeah.
Oh, you always beat me.
Go find it.
As soon as you find it, start reading off the principal part.
And I will.
Kaleuso, Kaleusa, Kaleusa, Kaleusa.
Okay, so which one is this?
The sixth principal verb.
Uh-huh, so it’s aorist, you were right, it’s aorist, good job, right?
Okay, so we have eon plus a subjunctive, followed by the future, so thesitai.
Now, you should be able to translate it, it’s a does, will, do.
Okay, so that would be the does.
and it’s an heiress right and it’s an heiress but i want you to recognize
it looks like it’s an active but it’s an heiress passive with that theta so okay okay just
to be ordered right they’re gonna be ordered yeah which sounds weird but yeah okay to be
ordered so the all right so it if these citizens good yes okay if they are what
in Klaus to see if they’re ordered good see the hoopoe that’s that Janet that’s
that hoopoe with the genitive of the agent if they’re ordered by i oh yeah my brain is like
an order that um by shame shame yes by shameful what by shameful what go all the way to the end
of the line to pick up that army no polito citizens citizens okay i’ll stick with that um
and yeah then you have another genitive packed in there the citizens taste the taste nasu nasa’s
island yes is it of the island yes right right so right if these citizens yeah this or if they stay
oh yeah order um if these so if these citizens are ordered by the citizens of the island
yeah by the by the ice crone citizens of the island the shame the shame of the
island good if they are ordered boyane they do something good good to do what
and here’s your double accusative to do kaka bad bad things to sinners
tooth and uh strangers or strangers stranger oh yeah yeah yeah so they would say to
yeah we would say to the strangers they would say to do the strangers bad okay right yeah because
their kind of strength okay um if all of that happens then if all of that happens then oh so
say satire who so say satire so say satire they so says this oh god oh that’s to save
so b2 they will not be saved yeah what will not be saved hey democracy
the democracy the democracy will not be saved ever not be saved yeah ever yeah paute you
ever good good fantastic look at that i mean it’s a big long ass sentence if and it’s a little bit
redundant you know but yeah look at it again and just as i’m saying it i want you to look over it
and realize oh god that’s exactly all we did was unlock the formula for what the that thing was
right if the citizens you know are ordered by those shameful citizens of the island
to do evil to the strangers the democracy will not be saved ever yeah yeah oh god i like that
Okay, how about number five look at it real quick. Tell me what it is. You can cheat and look at them
You can cheat and look at the parentheses. Oh
past contra factual conditional
Which what is that?
What is in a past contra factual a plus what what plus on it is that one?
People’s that one’s a plus heiress heiress was wrong, right? Correct. Correct
that’s so that’s what we’ve got and how what’s the translation formula um had done
done would have done yes had would have had would have so this is going to be if had then would have
so good now just take it apart i’m going to shut up and let you do it all right
Okay.
okay so the if indeed um they did not and they uh not had not appointed that would be active
make it passive okay um if they didn’t if they had not been appointed
not been okay had not been appointed to who who would toss into the hex into the hex
phalangas what are those phalangas is that it’s just a phalanx it’s a phalanx a group of soldiers
a line of soldiers yeah i don’t know it’s like weird because it’s yeah yeah because it’s in the
plural you can just say into six phalanxes or phalanges yeah if they had not been six
if they had not been appointed into six phalanges and then it just gives you the subject who
who is who wasn’t appointed the soldier no
hoi polemu imperoi hoi imperoi is your subject those what so those who
who are experienced yes and what are they experienced in they’re experienced in polemu
Army?
War.
Polimoron.
Right?
Okay.
War.
Right?
Good.
War.
Right?
So if those experienced in war had not been set up in six phalanges,
Six phalanges?
Yeah, what would not have happened?
Because it’s a had-would-have.
They would not have done that.
to the to whom who do they do the bad to to the horsemen good and uh the idk santa so the unjust
the the unjust horsemen yeah the horsemen who are doing unjust things right
yeah yeah yeah good good good good okay perfect look it’s a had would have past contrafactual
very very well done now you see it’s just a matter of the math again just a matter of the math so
what is the review trying to teach you really these reviews are trying to exercise the points
of grammar that you’re really going to find in the exam right notice how they’re still focusing
on conditionals it’s like dude seriously right like how much conditionals can we do
i feel like i’m still on conditionals you know yeah yeah well this is good it’s we’ve only been
a couple of weeks so it’s good look at what’s uh uh let’s see just look at the parentheses under
number six and just look at the kind of grammar they’re looking for there the dative of respect
okay dative of personal agent uh-oh so you’re gonna have a couple of goofy datives here plus
a circumstantial participle right and causal or temporal oh god look what you’re doing so
we’re dealing with those participles again right that’s a big deal how to how to how to translate
these participles okay what about number seven circumstantial participle all right once again
used consensusly introduced by kai pair oh god what does that mean yeah right right okay
genitive of time within which okay so there’s some genitives there that’s just practicing stuff you’re
you know you’re supposed to know look at the hortatory here we’re dealing with a hortatory
subjunctive as well good look you spotted it you spotted it right nice plus another circumstantial
participle showing purpose right okay circumstantial participle showing purpose that’s all that’s all
i want to know and then finally number eight attribute of participle now so we’ve got a
participle that’s showing the attributes of something an optative of wish they threw and
you know you’re going to get something one of these independent optatives right yeah okay a
purpose clause we’ve had those a while ago they’re going to throw one in for the hell of it and then
a future less vivid conditional sentence this is so packed look at this look just this is just
here’s just a future less vivid that’s it um what was that future less vivid again
vivid again what was the what was it’s a should wood but what is it’s a plus what
yes and it’s a should woods right uh but i was
should work yeah so so you know right away i mean you go into that you can
oh you want to try it go ahead just translate the should would a god
i was just saying i was reading the wrong sentence but nickelman should win uh would be
slaves yeah yeah yeah right right i’m in all of us right we would be slaves oh god that’s beautiful
there’s no problem right if he should win we’ll we would all be slaves oh god i should would
and you knew that from analyzing this this structure right so yeah okay okay let’s take a
break now and um come back in 10 let’s see let me ask you this would you like to do any more
exercises maybe from the any of the chapters eight nine or ten would you like to do any of those
or do you want to now step forward and do your exam um i’ll try doing the exam let’s do it let’s
do it how much of a break do you want before we jump in you tell me doesn’t matter to me we can
do 10 minutes okay 10 minutes i’ll see you at half past okay cool all right you there i’m here
fantastic okay let’s do this let’s do this here’s what i want to do i want you to take your time
all righty and i want you to relax and realize this physics and we’re just going to apply
whatever equations we can go to page 293 and i want you to look at one two three four five and
six i just want you to take a minute two minutes three minutes look at them and then i want you
to pick out the first one that you want to do please okay you could try doing uh uh number
two number two okay now here’s what i want you to do i want you to read it out loud to yourself
once I’m just gonna be listening for pronunciation I mean read it out loud
I’m gonna be listening for pronunciation but then I want you to sit there and I
want you to try to solve it so don’t worry too much about pronunciation but
Go ahead.
Okay.
and I’m going to write that down. And then we got the pepiteumenos, which is eumenos,
um having them in educated colors beautifully um um not having not so oh and people do be um not
Please note, as you’re working through it,
that this is an extremely long you know cluster of uh sentences here so don’t worry don’t worry
about it’s it’s like two examples packed into one so just take your time and don’t worry okay all
All right. I think I’ve solved them.
Okay. You think you got it solved?
Yes, perhaps.
Excellent. Let’s hear it.
okay on the one hand the people had not have having not been educated beautifully or
not being educated beautifully not did not wish to be led on the other hand the king
did not wish to lead um this did not did not do this uh oh that’s whatever um oh friends
because um even the people were persuaded um indeed the king and queen uh did did good for
all the citizens okay okay let’s look at it sentence at a time first sentence i would give a
95 96 97 somewhere in that range right you got that perfect home in perfectly um yeah the people
right because they weren’t taught well they didn’t want to be ruled and on the other hand the king
didn’t want to rule them right so okay good that’s that’s a top a on that one the next one
if give it a low a if we would rearrange one statement look at the very opening
what is that just what is the you know what is that thing it’s from
poyo right yeah to do right yeah yeah let’s let’s do hutos in such a way hoste hoste that
the people and now this is the accusative subject with the infinitive so this is where your little
bit of wobble was yeah this is a little bit of wobble that took you from a hundred to a to a 90.
um so that the people all right pay this thy toy bossy lay yeah so they be persuaded or obey so
the people obey the king right the king and what else here’s another subject accusative
and so that the king and then you translated the rest properly so that the king does good
things for all of the citizens you translate that correctly okay good now that was two that was an
entire paragraph with two sentences well done there are six exercises you’ll be doing three
pick your second exercise please um okay three fantastic read that loud and then take your time
okay
by the way you picked one that’s very difficult this is uh nine out of ten on nine out of ten
on difficulty so okay you’re challenging yourself excellent hey righty here’s a hoopoe um and here’s
all right okay go for it oh daughter indeed if you make a sacrifice to the gods they may protect
your brother in order that the indictment of theft is hated okay okay i’m gonna ask you one question
underneath this underneath this greek is printed the question what kind of conditional is this um
you you picked us you picked an incredibly difficult yeah yeah you get you get points
you get points for it it’s me yeah i was just trying it uh well i know i know it’s on so i
assume that the that it’s like um like a potential optative or something for for lock size probably
some relative pronouns okay know that it is a conditional and that the protesis has a substituted
participle susasa is a substituted participle so this is yeah i i had no idea it’s like and
in addition to that in addition to that this is difficult because they should have put
a comma after susasa that’s your if clause everything up to susasa is your if clause
Your then clause is fuloxis on.
So this is a participle plus an optative plus on.
So we have substituted a plus an optative for this conditional.
Okay, so do you get what it is?
It’s a future less vivid.
Okay, yeah.
so no knowing it’s a future less vivid now i want you to try to translate it again go ahead and use
an if clause for it but use exactly what the future less vivid so be translation go ahead if
you should good make a sacrifice good good uh they would protect your brother you would guard your
brother a guard they may they would guard okay good yeah it’s a second second person singer you
would guard your brother right and this description you’re right you said it in the end but look at
the tone adelfon tone grafenta your brother the one charged um indicted oh yeah okay
indicted who’s he indicted by the enemy hated good
the enemies good and the club base is the charge he’s indicted on endured on indicted on a charge
of what of theft right i’m a charge of theft okay so look what you did you picked the hardest
because this is a disguised it’s a disguised conditional with a participle that’s taken up
the first the protest right and instead of an a plus an optative so nice once you notice that
once you corrected it once you recognized it as a future less vivid you were able to translate it
then exactly as it should i mean before you walk through the words and i can see that you’ve got
your vocabulary you’ve got all the words but you’re not engaging the fact that it’s an actual
conditional you’re not really making it clear to me so i in your performance i want to see you make
that clear and that’s why i say okay stop now make this correction in your calculation and
all of a sudden your results are correct so you know how it is on a physics exam when you go in
and you get you do the calculations properly up until a point and then because you’ve made an
error it throws off the rest of your calculations so that’s what i would be doing as a classics
instructor i would be saying okay now you’ve got this now make this slight adjustment and see what
the rest comes out to. And boom, you get the right calculation. That’s only because that’s an
extremely difficult example. You pick the hardest. Congratulations. I would give you
pre-correction an 80. On that post-correction, I’d give you a 90, 92-ish. Okay. So it’s in the range
of what we need uh post correction you have another that you should do one to six there um
and um yeah go ahead and pick from those one to six because there’s an yeah there’s enough
goodness there for you to get another good one out okay um maybe number four number four okay
uh yep okay go you got it number four take your time you know what don’t pronounce it we don’t
need i don’t need to correct your pronunciation i want you now to pretend that you’re in a
classroom you just got this one thrown in front of you and i want you to do it don’t feel like
you got to talk at all i don’t want to you don’t have to let me hear anything just do it go for it
i got it all except um let me give me another minute uh i think it’s gonna say it’s gonna get
for me all right let’s do it i’m missing one word that i can’t remember to say okay what is the one
word uh elesus i cannot release it yeah that which is true right the real okay yeah there it is
all right well anyway all right so indeed around the cities and through the the true the truth
though the wisdom was not being taught by socrates on the one hand um by not honoring the wealthy
that here’s what i want you to do with your calculations i want you to put a comma at the
end of the first line i want you to put a comma on the end of the first line and i want you to notice
dia ta ta is the definite article and the word that this is the definite article of is pepi
deus thy way at the end this is an articular infinitive this is an articular infinitive and
that dia is because of so i want you to think of it that way take it take a couple of more minutes
take a couple of more more minutes and try to get that articular infinitive because of the what the
pepideostai the may pepideostai okay take a couple of minutes try to work that out more smoothly
and remember you’re looking for an accusative subject there right of who’s doing who who’s
doing that verb or who that verb is being done to you need an accusative subject there
this is an articular infinitive dia to may pepideostai okay take a couple more minutes
work on that one a little bit more all right so okay oh and i forgot to mention politas oh sorry
that’s scary politas is citizens not cities citizens okay all right okay so i tried again
um because of socrates the wisdom was not really being taught to the citizens in order that he
didn’t honor the wealthy um persuaded that or by demosthenes who was unworthy of speaking although
he wished to save democracy okay okay although look at the start with the ending although he
wished to save democracy kai pair ethelon tain democra tian sosa exactly right although he
wished to save democracy and who is this that we’re talking about demosthenes so good demosthenes the
rhetorician a decato was treated poorly although he wanted to save the democracy right come on man
they treat him poorly although okay now let’s go back to the beginning and i want you to see
that this first line is itself one unit that’s why they should have they should have put a comma
after this after the end of that first line what this is and is an articular infinitive
tall that article the second word plus may pepideus thy so if you just translate tall may
pepideus thy it’s the not having been educated yeah so because the not having been educated
but now who’s not having been educated we need an accusative to be the subject because the citizens
had not been educated petty to alethus about the truth toys so froisi by the wise people
okay because all of that then we’re gonna get something else happening because of all that
socrates make him the subject on the one hand socrates
uk etimato was not honored okay upoton eudaimonon was not honored what upoton eudaimonon um by
the happy or wealthy good he was not honored by the fortunate or happy or wealthy or whatever
but oh god sorry that was the power power went out uh damn oh no sorry about that sorry about
that okay let me let me help you finish i’m going to finish correcting this one so then after that
top sentence right because because of this lack of education in these people right socrates on
one hand like you said was not honored by those wealthy people and then demosthenes the rhetorician
was treated poorly although and then you got the rest although you want you know preserve
the democracy okay now look at that that’s one two three four lines and it’s really wait no
one two three it’s really three but it is several it’s really three sentences to be quite honest
that you’ve got sitting there so i want you to take that into consideration and know that your
grade there would be somewhere around like an 87 ish okay so look i wanted to do one last thing
one last exercise on your exam if it’s a little sidling i want you to turn to page 299 and look
at 299 and i want you to look at number one i want you to look at number number one okay and i want
you to the only thing i’m going to say about this one is the i sometimes talk about how order
doesn’t matter this one the order is not something you’re gonna see the subject is near the end
the verb is in the beginning i see the hose or down there yeah but it’s the same it’s the same
math it’s just in a jumbled order right um and your verb is showing up right at the beginning
this is very very weird right but it is possible in greek so i just want you to try to tackle
number one and uh yeah and i just want you to know there’s no real tricks going on there anything
it’s just right subject verb and then all right go ahead go ahead number one and you don’t need
to read it out loud your pronunciation is great just give that a shot and let me know when you’re
ready all right i’m going to interrupt for a second the other thing that i wanted to
say that i don’t is remember they’re giving us this socrates a lot and the endings look
look very weird like this one socrates it’s not going to look like a typical
genitive but it is we are never going to be i mean unless you’re reading a shit ton of
play-doh or something um you’re not going to really be dealing with these names a lot you
know demosthenes we just had demosthenes i forgot to really push this home with you which i think i
need to do um don’t worry about these nouns um that are the names that stuff is going to come
along what’s really important is that you’re getting these weird third declension nouns
that’s really what they’re trying to do but anyway okay just don’t let it throw you the
forms of socrates don’t let them throw you okay so the death of socrates was announced by the
priests who were doing the sacrifice oh god perfect 100 okay 100 okay do you see how it is
my goodness i gotta wow unbelievable do you see how it is when you’re doing these lengthy sentences
that have four, five, six different odd constructions
or complicated constructions.
They have intentionally packed that thing
more so than you would reading a typical ancient Greek text.
So you’re dealing with a lot of weightlifting.
You’re lifting a lot of weight.
And when you are suddenly given a sentence that’s just,
okay, great, this one’s just straight out of it
we’ve got no, they’re not throwing any curve balls or anything at us. Notice how you get it
like that, right? That’s, yeah, that’s what you should be concentrating on. Your overall score,
I’d give you the same thing, about an 87 to 88, 89, somewhere in that range right there on the
overall exam right so that is outstanding for um intensive greek exam it’s outstanding
absolutely outstanding please keep it up we’ve got to continue tomorrow you’ve got to do
unit 11 and i’m thinking if unit here’s what i’d like you to do i’m i’m gonna remember i’m
to be tailoring the class according to how you’re responding and i think what i’d like to do is for
tomorrow i’d like to do unit 11 only this time what i want you to do is i want you just to read
through it and then i want you to do as many exercises as you can don’t study anything just
Start doing exercises.
And if you get through one and you think you got 60, 70% of it, stop.
Go on to the next one.
Okay.
So what we’re going to do tomorrow is we’re going to focus on that repetition of those exercises.
Get you back.
And this will continue to correct your conditionals, your results, your purpose, all that kind of stuff.
So well done.
Well done.
um well i hope that you i hope that you feel beaten down but uh like um vindicated because
your machine is working your analysis is working right so keep it up what do you
what what do you how do you feel about the uh about making it through unit 10 um that that
was hard it’s just a lot and you know i don’t have it all memorized but i can like work my way
through it and i think that’s good yeah and the more exercises we do together the the better you
work it out so emphasis on exercises tomorrow i want to get through as many of those as we can
okay cool okay all right do you have any questions for me i don’t think so um exercises
okay i may drag you on lady pablo on friday if that’s okay yeah that’s fine that sounds fantastic
a little bit of extra extra class time fantastic okay i’ll see you tomorrow congratulations on
making it through the this exam there’s only a couple more and we’ll be there okay sounds good
