The episode frames Herodotus as the first historian and claims his history begins with the abduction of women. Ammon Hillman reads the opening of the Histories, where Phoenician traders lay out their goods on the shore at Argos. On the fifth or sixth day, the daughters of the king, including Io, come down to look at the merchandise. The traders give an order, and the women are seized; most escape, but Io and a few others are harpasthenai (ἁρπασθεῖσαι), which the show translates as snatched away, taken by force. They are then sailed to Egypt.
The chain of retaliation follows. Greeks go to Tyre and take Europa, the king’s daughter. Later, in the same back-and-forth, Greeks come to Colchis, conduct their business, and then take Medea, the king’s daughter, who is described as on the cusp of puberty, not yet fully grown. Her father’s herald asks for her return and for justice, and the episode notes that the Greeks give no answer. From there it moves to Alexander, the son of Priam, who the text says knew no one was being punished for these acts and so took Helen. That, the hour says, is the beginning of the war that fills the poems.
The closing section turns to the language of a Byzantine physician named Nik. The episode reads his lists of perichristing, the smearing of the genitals with compounds, and connects the word eunoukhos and the pathikos (παθικός) figure to the boys described in the texts.
