Ammon Hillman steps away from the Greek for a night and into the Latin of Pliny’s Natural History, book twenty-eight, where the subject is medicine from human beings. The warning at the top is that there is no satire, and the chapter is read literally. The epileptic is told to drink the warm blood of a gladiator as a living cup, the lips applied to the wound for the vital spirit, and the list continues into the sucking of the marrow and the brains of infants. The body, in this Roman medicine, is a pharmaceutical instrument.
The fluency goes both ways. Pliny records that men of the serpent-handling family could be thrown into a container of vipers and come out only licked, and that their sweat and saliva were the medicine. The same text preserves the strigil, the gymnasium scraper, and the scrape of a wrestler, the boy sweat used for the uterus and the joints. Hillman sets this beside the gospel scene at the last supper, the morsel dipped and given to Judas, the method being to apply the substance for the sake of the mind, and reads the whole tissue of language as the same pharmacy.
The night’s artifact is an insertion in a twelfth-century manuscript, the recipe that begins with toads fed on pigeon flesh and honey and ends in milk, fetal matter, and flame. The three plants of the source return in Nicander, the one that changes the mind, the one that kills the taster, and the one that sickens the liver, and against them stands the theriac. The cup of Lady Babylon is the same cup, and the promise for the second part is the fire, the serpents, and the bottom of the well.
