The heart of this episode is a second-century letter from Clement of Alexandria about what he and Ammon Hillman call the Mystic Gospel of Mark, the text most people know as the Secret Gospel of Mark. Clement is writing to a man named Theodore, warning him about the Carpocratians, whom the Greek names as prophets and wandering stars, asteres planētai (ἀστέρες πλανῆται). The people he is worried about are described with the same language the gospels use for sinners, the hamartōloi (ἁμαρτωλοί), those driven by fleshly desire, and the letter says they make the deep teachings their own nature, pefysiōmenoi (πεφυσιωμένοι), the deep things of Satan.
Then the episode reads the story everyone misses: after six days a rich young man named in the text is brought to Jesus in Bethany. He had died, and his sister comes begging for him, and Jesus rolls the stone away from the tomb and raises the young man, the neaniskos (νεανίσκος). The boy looks at Jesus, falls in love with him, and begs to stay with him, and the letter says that in the evening the youth came to Jesus having wrapped his body in a linen cloth, a sindōn (σινδών), and that Jesus taught him through the night the mystery of the kingdom of God. That single wrapped cloth is put side by side with Mark 14, which says the boy arrested with Jesus fled naked and left the same cloth behind.
The claim being made is that the Mystic Gospel is not an isolated text but the same scene as the canonical arrest, and that the initiation was not for adults. The episode says the Christian rite was performed on children, that the young person becomes a dispensary or factory from which the remedy is drawn, and that the bandage marks the place of the Christing. The final move is Clement’s own rule: some truth must be left to faith, and a fact that contradicts the faith must be denied. That, the show argues, is the control system, not an argument, and it is why the deeper text had to be silenced.
