Ammon Hillman opens the seal on the second chapter of Genesis and reads it in the Septuagint Greek. The opening he highlights is biblos (βίβλος), which he says is not the ordinary word for a book but the term for sacred and magical writings, and the heading becomes the book of the generation of Ouranos and Gaia. In the same lines, God does not simply make Adam; the Greek pleassō (πλάσσω), he reports, means to educate and bring a person to a technical capacity. The paradise is planted in Edem, not Eden, and the chapter reads, in his telling, like an initiatory text rather than a creation story.
The woman is the center. Where the English says Eve, the Greek gives the name Zoe (ζωή), life, and Hillman reports that Ewa is a Bacchic shout, one of the cult names of Dionysus, known even to the church historian Eusebius. He reads the garden as a paradise of truphe (τρυφή), of wantonness and luxuriance, and argues the woman is the boethos (βοηθός), the warrior-companion who comes to the side with a shield, the role of Minerva and the Amazons. In his account, the text says the woman was taken from the man, an etymology that only makes sense through the Etruscan word virago, the heroic female warrior, not through Hebrew.
The drugging is the climax. God’s answer for Adam’s solitude is an ekstasis (ἔκστασις), a standing outside and distraction of mind, the same word used of trance and mania. Hillman moves from there to Paul, who in 2 Corinthians says he knew a man in Christ caught up to the third heaven, and he reads the Greek as a youth not yet fourteen, a vision caused by a thorn in the flesh and a messenger of Satan. The episode’s claim, is that paradise and the apostle’s ecstasy both point to the same initiatory practice of the mystery.
